Phil Frank’s The Elderberries centers around Dusty, a cowboy whose middle aged daughter has decided it’s time for him to hang up his spurs and move to Elderpark, a retirement community. While there, Dusty meets the Professor, a great brain with a bad memory; Evelyn, who can still see well enough to drive at night; and the General, a veteran with bad hips and a lot of stories. Together, they deal with medications, the loss of youth, and their adult children while maintaining their humor and building their friendships.

The “in spirit” expression reminds me of the story of the pastor who asked the church members whom he saw on Saturday if they were going to be in the worship service the next day.
When the pastor got up to preach at the pulpit in the church’s building the next day, he noticed that not very members were in attendance with the pews mostly empty.
So, he said, “There’s sure a lot of spirits here today.”
Evelyn wants the Professor to have to earn his dinner date.
Either that or she figures that she could choose a better place to go eat than he can.

Eat next door to the local gym, then “pop over” and work it off!

As dinner plan go, it doesn’t really matter if he’s part of the decision anyway. You know they’ll end up where she wants to go regardless.
