    It’s a big step backward folks, but it’s only temporary. Fifty years ago it was illegal for interracial couples to marry in much of the US.
    White people marched with blacks for equality, that’s why it’s important for straight people like myself to stand up for LGBT rights today.
    It won’t happen overnight, but America will come around.

    Exactly. Any fight for equality has temporary setbacks, but we’ll get there eventually.

    Doctortoon - I frequently enjoy your posts and just wanted to thank you for a simple and elegant argument on this particular topic. I always try to remember this poem, and hope others do too -
    “When the Nazis came for the communists,
    I remained silent;
    I was not a communist.

    When they locked up the social democrats,
    I remained silent;
    I was not a social democrat.

    When they came for the trade unionists,
    I did not speak out;
    I was not a trade unionist.

    When they came for the Jews,
    I remained silent;
    I was not a Jew.

    When they came for me,
    there was no one left to speak out.

    Gays have all kinds of civil rights. They don’t have the right to “marry” each other because that would be a redefinition of the word “marriage.” No one is arresting them or persecuting them in America. The “Civil rights” argument is an absolute canard. Those that have chosen this lifestyle have chosen to forsake the path of “marriage,” and that is their “civil right”!

    People do not choose to be gay, they just are. But for the sake of argument lets say it’s a choice. Why shouldn’t they have equal rights anyway? If someone chooses to be a bigoted moron, should they lose their right to free speech? No. They still have the right to post their stupidity on internet message boards.

    Well said, doctortoon! HabaneroBuck, I suggest you look up the history of marriage. And why on earth do you wish to hurt people who aren’t hurting you, and who aren’t taking anything away from you?

    From HabaneroBuck:

    “They don’t have the right to “marry” each other because that would be a redefinition of the word “marriage.””

    Not really, no. A single word can have multiple definitions. An example: What does the word “tape” mean? You can only provide one definition, and I will not provide context. Can you provide me with the correct definition? If no, why not?

    Right doctortoon, who in the world would Choose a lifestyle that in many cases is and has been derned dangerous. NOT!!

    Shoot, the heterosexual couples aren’t getting married, so how are local governments going to make any money on Marriage Licenses unless…? (:>}

    I think we’re coming at it from the wrong angle…let’s consider the legal ramifications getting married - basically you are binding yourself, your credit score, your debt and income to someone else - your giving someone else the right to speak for you if you can’t - this, IMO, should be legal to anyone who wants it, and quite honestly, I don’t see what the big, hairy deal is… it isn’t until you start talking about marriage in RELIGION that people get all worked up…the usual argument it that God meant for marriage to be 1 man and 1 woman - well, if said couple are Christian and don’t fit that mold, they should take it up with their pastor, but I don’t think any Church should have the right to say whether two people can LEGALLY enter into such a contract with each other…

    rhastings said, 11 months ago

    it might be a MORAL sin, but it would still be LEGALLY possible…

    I’ve posted elsewhere that the government should just issue certificates of civil union to every couple regardless of sexual orientation. This would move the issue of marriage from the state to the church where it belongs. I think that even more than the church or state, it’s the insurance companies that should be afraid of gay marriage. Think of all the extra ‘spouses’ that would have to be covered.

    HabaneroBuck - merriam webster’s majority of definitions for marriage are not gender specific. “an intimate or close union” that occurs between two consenting adults is NONE OF YOUR BUSINESS.

    oh and by the way, do you CHOOSE to be straight??
