    “Spiced Apple Sauce”

    6 tart apples
    1 cup boiling water
    3 whole cloves
    1 1/2 tablespoons vinegar
    1/3 cup white sugar
    1 tablespoon margarine or butter

    Core and quarter apples; do not peel. Put in saucepan with water and cloves.
    Simmer, tightly covered, till apples are tender; press through sieve.
    Return to heat; add vinegar and sugar; simmer 10 minutes.
    Remove from heat; beat in margarine or butter.
    Serve either hot or cold with roast fowl or roast pork.
    Yield 1 1/2 cups.
