Black eyed peas are a new year’s tradition in this house, but this year we had to add on an extra bedroom for them.

There’s an explanation for everything:

Witness the tragic story of the Lecter Family. They were very poor. All they could afford was a big pot of tree bark and pea gravel soup to eat once a week.

Hannibal and his brothers fought over the pot and every so often one of the brothers would fall in: A rare source of protein for the others. Hannibal was eventually an only child.

Even though he can afford different these days, he retains his perverse craving. He also is nostalgic for that gravel, and black-eyed peas resemble them.
