Either change “knew” to “know” or make the last phrase past-tense… you know, for consistency?

It’s the little things that show you really care.

How about learning the correct spelling of “past tense”?

We want to be consistent, right?

    HolySmoke:

The hyphenation was, admittedly, non-standard. One could make the argument that it is still an attributive adjective even though it’s after the noun.

To echo your adorable pedantry, I’ll note that I “spelled” both words in the phrase correctly. Also, as this is a colloquial venue, I ain’t that worried ‘bout no stylebook sensibilities, neither.

And my comments weren’t focused on the grammar aspect of the “joke,” but on the context as shown. So, good job on being willfully obtuse.

How did a talking frog and a human get on a raft in the middle of the ocean, anyway? You want consistent? Explain THAT!

To quote a great American commentor:

“It’s the little things that show you really care.”

Exactly! Even though the hyphenation choice I made was unusual, I still thought about it and how it would either contribute to or diminish the point I was trying to make.

    Glad to see we agree.

  24. HolySmoke

    HolySmoke said, 2 months ago

Unusual? No. It was an incorrect spelling of the word.
The correct spelling is “past tense”, not “past-tense”.

I gave you a hard time because you gave Scott Hilburn a hard time. The difference is you can’t seem to take criticism.

It’s a phrase, not a word. A phrase which I chose to hyphenate in a non-standard manner to emphasize its role as an attributive adjective.

We’re all sorry about your uncle… it wasn’t your fault.

  27. HolySmoke

    HolySmoke said, 2 months ago

    Crunkbot…

No. I’m sorry. You are wrong. It’s a noun. It’s not a “phrase”, and you cannot “hyphenate in a non-standard manner to emphasize its role as an attributive adjective”.
    Nice try.

    past tense

    n. A verb tense used to express an action or a condition that occurred in or during the past. For example, in While she was sewing, he read aloud, was sewing and read are in the past tense
