OK, I know he’s kneeling, but his legs just seem to disappear. And what’s with the red disc? Is someone trying to assassinate him with a laser cannon?

OK, I get St Jerome, but the crucifix, do others see a Tau cross, instead of the modern 4 ended cross? Also, were tonsured monks a fixture in the time of St Jerome? Sure, tonsured monks were around in Botticelli’s time, but I thought they were anathema in Jerome’s time.

Click-for-larger-than-lifesize image can be found here, or at the only work, by this artist, so far, to appear in Mr. Melcher’s blog.

The Last Communion of Saint Jerome (link shows painting’s Wikipedia page, Google translated Italian Wikipedia page shows both parts) is shown, in a different coloration, ornately framed image, and described (Catalogue Entry, etc., has more), by its current-location page (click the image there for interactive enlargement).

A different coloration, click-to-enlarge image can be found here, along with a description, and companion detail image, described here. The artist’s Catholic Encyclopedia bio, Wikipedia page (Google translated Italian Wikipedia page has more), and collection (many more under Subcategories at each level).
