    @ Radish:
    Dear Radish,
    A bit off topic, but is your avatar a photo of you, or some historical figure that I do not recognize?
    I ask because last year I let my hair and beard grow out for many months; throw a pair of glasses on him and I looked very much like your avatar. I eventually gave in to a haircut and beard trimming, but I rather miss looking like a Civil War general.

    He reminds me of Orson Wells, very confident with arms folded while ice skating during the Little Ice Age.

    @Gary McSpook

    If you click on the icon it takes you to the homepage, I sometimes post about the avatar there. This is what I have now.
    .
    The avatar is a picture of Sri Yukteswar Giri, 1855 – 1936, the guru of Satyananda Giri and Paramahansa Yogananda. Yukteshwar was an educator, astronomer, a Jyotisha (Vedic astrologer), a yogi, and a believer in the Bhagavad Gita and the Bible. He was a disciple of Lahiri Mahasaya of Varanasi and a member of the Giri branch of the swami order. Yogananda considered Yukteswar as Jnanavatar, or “Incarnation of Wisdom”.
    .
    I thought we could use a little wisdom during these strange days.

    Click-to-enlarge image can be found here or here. Smaller enlargement can be found at the only work, by this artist, so far, to appear in Mr. Melcher’s blog.

    The Skater (Portrait of William Grant) is shown, with a different coloration image, and described, by its current-location page. Another different coloration image can be found here, and another one can be found here; but there are several different coloration or detail images of it online.

    If you want to read about the painting’s details, this has a 9 page article you can read for free online (after registering). The artist’s Wikipedia page and collection (more under Subcategories at each level).

    As an established trendsetter in men’s hosiery, Monsignor Boitano was just a “little” ahead of his time,
    in that it took another 175 years until the “Hokey Pokey” caught on at skating and roller rinks accross the country…..
    --
    he is however, recognised at a modest memorial in Poughkeepsie….
