No-one with a passion for musical theatre would be seen DEAD in that robe, darling!

It does look like a particularly unsuccessful theatre set. Or one of those old musical movie sets with little bunches of flowers “growing” all over the green-hessian “grass.”

Modestly enlarged image can be found here, or at Mr. Melcher’s blog entry.

St. Francis in the Desert (AKA St. Francis in Ecstasy, links show his and painting’s Wikipedia pages, 2nd points to detail images) is described by its current-location (shows room) page (click its different coloration image, or 4 accompanying detail images, for interactive enlargement) — Google Art Project page, and 2 hour-long lectures about the painting.

Another enlarged different coloration image can be found here (along with a short description); but there are many different coloration or detail images available online. The artist‘s Wikipedia page and collection (many more under Subcategories at each level).

Second of the 3 works by this artist, that have, so far, appeared in Mr. Melcher’s blog, to also appear here.
