Pete Rose got a lifetime ban, his activities didn’t affect the actual games like doping does.

Well, Davis is doing his part to cool down the PED whispers. He hasn’t hit much of anything since the All-Star break …

The legit record? In a 162 game season, not the real record – Ruth’s.

Remember when Pete Rose was the most evil thing to happen to baseball? Would he even get a passing glance today?

Maris did it in fewer at bats ….

    Maris’ HRs by year:
    1957 14
    1958 28
    1958 9
    1958 19
    1959 16
    1960 39
    1961 61
    1962 33
    1963 23
    1964 26
    1965 8
    1966 13
    1967 9
    1968 5
1961 total is 56% more than 1960 and 85% more than 1962. Never before or after did he reach 30.

Differences between 1960 and 1961: Two new teams meant lousy pitching; one of the new ballparks was a bandbox that you or I could have hit homers out in; Maris had Mantle batting ahead of him, so pitchers had to choose their poison; they didn’t have video scouting so they didn’t know how to pitch Maris.

Also remember that there were no PEDs back in the olden days.

A-rod might be the next to get a lifetime ban although I think he’s desperately trying to work out some kind of plea bargain. It was kind of funny how quickly Braun’s former defenders turned against him…….

If it’s HRs by year, it should just have one entry for 1958 (28).

Because of injuries, or managers’ decisions, Maris was a part-time player much of his career; he only played in more than 150 regular season games in 1961 and 1962.

Mantle hit 40 in 1960, 54 in 1961, and 30 in 1962 (though he was injured, he still had 502 PA), so Maris wasn’t the only one with a spike in 1961.

To add to what @Joseph Houk said about weak pitching in 1961, Norm Cash, a career .271 hitter, led the AL with a .361 BA in 1961, between years hitting .286 and .243, another oddity that year — perhaps the baseball had something to do with it as well.

Rose was a manager when he bet on games. How do you know the games were not affected by his game day decisions? He deserves the ban.

Is Aaron Rodgers still defending Braun?

    @CAtransplant

Babe Ruth (1927)- 60 home runs in 540 at bats
Roger Maris (1961)- 61 home runs in 590 at bats

Actually Maris batted 3rd and Mantle 4th.
