Brian Kelly isn’t exactly chopped liver himself. He’s taken over a program that had become a poor imitation of what it used to be and made it relevant again.

HOWEVER, neither one is able to prove they are really the #1 team because Div 1 football does not have a real playoff.
OTOH, Div 2 does and it works quite well.
Meanwhile over in Div 1 you have lots and lots of really meaningless bowl games whose only purpose as far as I can see is to make more money for BCS.

I have to give Kelly credit for building, in very short time, a very credible football program at Notre Dame.
‘Bama has the luxury of being a defending national champion ( Thanks, to great coaching by Sabin and the lousy coaching by Miles ), and having an extremely effective recruiting base throughout the South.
I’ve got to go with the underdog. Look for the Fighting Irish to turn back the Tide tonight !

Let Saban on the field. Then they can hose whats left of him off.

@Linguist
When Lou Holtz was the coach at Minnesota, he had one school-specific clause in his contract that if Notre Dame came calling, he could leave without a buyout. Notre Dame doesn’t recruit football players, it chooses football players. The cupboard wasn’t bare when Kelly arrived.

They were only let loose for BCS championship if I remember correctly.And you have to blame ND admin for their lack of success. Jerry Faust, George Leahy? Ty Willingham. As to Holtz, when Woody Hayes was fired, he said he wouldn’t want to be the coach that followed Woody Hayes, but to be the coach that FOLLOWED the coach that followed Woody Hayes. I think this goes for many programs where a titan has moved on.
