It’s been reported that more than a few coaches simply hand over the responsibility of voting on the “Coaches Poll” to an assistant or someone in the college’s public affairs office. The whole concept of college team rankings is nothing but a joke – not anything to be taken seriously by anyone with any critical facilities.

NCAA desparately needs real playoffs for football.
until they get them, i refuse to pay any attention to “national champions”

I’ve been there on the high school & state level. That is what some coaches do & some aren’t even that accurate, or thoughtful. Others are very conscienstious & helpful. But they all say, “Polls don’t mean anything.”

NCAA desperately needs to get over the idea that there can BE any sort of “national champion” in college football. There are too many teams, playing too few games. The only way you could set up any sort of meaningful playoff system, considering that more than a game a week is impractical, is to set up the entire REGULAR SEASON as a tournament, and that would necessitate making up each week’s schedules after the previous week’s games had been played. This also means that the vast majority of teams would be eliminated after a couple of weeks.
Have conference champions, a few high-profile bowl games, and then just let everybody argue for their favorites in bars. That’s what they’ll do anyway…

I have an idea for a football playoff system, take the top 8 teams by record, if there are ties, for two teams flip a coin, for three or more high card wins. Use the Rose, Orange, Sugar, and Fiesta bowls for the quarter-finals on New Year’s day. Have the four winners meet in the semi-finals on the second Saturday of Jan. With the Finals on the third Saturday. That would keep the bowl system and create a true playoff system at the same time
