    That is the flight recorder which is orange. It turns black from the fire.

    No, they stayed pretty orange in all the ones I’ve seen, even after severe fires around them. But, the point of the toon is the box is more important than the people, but at THAT same time, folks get way too carried away about body parts. The demands for return of the bodies so they’re families can bury them in peace, shows little understanding of plane crashes, massive fires, or the collapse of the World Trade Center, or forty years of demands for return of bodies from Viet Nam, or recently WW II. When a “body” no longer exists, what’s the friggin’ point?

    What we SHOULD be demanding, in Ukraine and Israel/Gaza, is and END to CREATING BODIES our of living humans…ANY of them!!

    We know, from the reliable US sources, that the Russians erased evidence and refused to release the bodies or the Black Boxes (to cover up their guilt), and then vetoed the investigation every other member of the UN Security Council voted for it.

    The Germans did similar things in ‘14, and the West failed to respond until it was almost too late.

    If Obama were not such a wimp, he would have nuked Russia five years ago. Today, five years late, no one can see how any US President could be such a coward that he hasn’t yet called for a massive nuclear retaliatory strike against the Russkies for shooting down that airliner. If Obama doesn’t finally get busy and nuke Russia, what will the History Books say?

    I suspect the History books would say (if they could talk) ‘Thank You’ for not destroying the planet.

    Really? The videos I’ve watched of the ‘black box’ being handled – even after the mishandling by the rebels – were indeed orange.

    Re. nuking and history books; given that both sides in this hypothetical exercise have considerable numbers of very powerful nuclear devices and intercontinental delivery systems, planet destruction is not necessarily precluded.

    Black boxes are orange for easier discovery in the wreckage, and are called “black” due to the ugly, dark, black times they become of interest to us. I suppose we should be grateful the “Russian” Ukrainians are volunteering it so nicely in a photo op…never mind the clowns shot down a civilian airliner with the neat-o toys Russia gave them!! What the “F” good does it do anyone, when we ALREADY KNOW why the plane went down?!? How about just admitting how wrong you were in shooting blindly at a jet, and returning the bodies to their respective families!!! Oh, I guess that would not be politically expedient…besides Putin told you to blame the Ukrainian government!

    In science and engineering, a black box is a device, system or object which can be viewed in terms of its input, output and transfer characteristics without any knowledge of its internal workings. Its implementation is “opaque” (black). Almost anything might be referred to as a black box: a transistor, an algorithm, or the human brain.
    The opposite of a black box is a system where the inner components or logic are available for inspection, which is sometimes known as a clear box, a glass box, or a white box.

    @tauyen

    Yes and yet it is still called “black box” which has little to do with it other than its some times appearance. So my point was ignored in favor of the recent ones appearance? Call it a flight recorder.

    Yes, had this been Bush he would’ve repeated the same information even after it had been repeatedly proved false.
