    @UM5

    The scenarios for Global Warming included cold Winters in some places and mild Winters in others. You question is of the same mental depth as those who claim Global Warming due to hot Summers. Doesn’t work that way in Science. Try reading and understanding Science.

    We had a low of -27 last week, yesterday was up to 54, it’’s called winter in our area, and we need snow, badly, but aren’t getting any soon. BTW, coldest I was in was -65 in Yellowstone in 1964, fairly comfortable until the wind came off the lake!!

    Only scientists understand the Kelvin scale; be careful with this crew!

    Climate deniers attention please: Local weather is NOT climate. Please, please get at least SOME sophistication. Don’t believe everything you hear and see on Fox. Repeat: climate and weather are NOT the same. Geeez, I’m so tired of hearing these ill informed opinions all the time.

    I think you mean -273C.

    Only recently has anything been produced in a state of < 0 Kelvin. And yes, it is truly possible to have such negative temperatures. I remember doing a statistical mechanics problem from Reif’s Stat Mech book on the subject, back in 1970. Recently, a system with a very small negative temperature (Kelvin scale) was created.

    back to the toon:

    In the early 60s, I read that when techs at early rocket sites came across rattlesnakes, they would spray them with LOX (Liquid Oxygen). Instant death. Then they would tap it with a hammer or something, causing the snake to shatter.

    So, 50K would work.

    ^Yep, stand corrected, but meant -273.16 C. actually, for of course absolute zero and cessation of molecular activity.

    We also froze critters, including rattlers, with liquid nitrogen, but them in bell jars, evacuated the air and moisture as they thawed, and had good taxidermy specimens! (my brother, aeronautical engineer and “rocket scientist”reported they regularly froze critters when fueling missiles at several test sites.)

    Yeah, but that is a bit more dangerous, as rocket engines are not fueled by liquid nitrogen, but by liquid oxygen. And liquid oxygen and organics of any kind is “BOOM!!”

    I do not say it can not be done. It may just be one of those aerospace myths, but I had heard that at one of the test stands out at Edwards (I worked at the Santa Susana facility myself) they took a dead rat, quickly placed it into liquid oxygen and threw it against a free standing wall, some of the wall actually survived the resulting explosion!!

    @Robert Landers

    Perhaps ithe techs allowed the lox to clear away before hammering. The snake or whatever would still be cold enough to shatter without starting an exothermic reaction….
