We used to call them “horny toads”, not knowing the ‘other’ meaning of that word when we were 7.

Could it have originally been horned toed, like the fringe toed French toad?

The critters actually have horns so there’s a play on words working. I lived in Coalinga, CA, home of an annual Horned Toad derby, when I was 9. Fun stuff! :-)

In a New Yorker Cartoon, another man has a lizard hanging from his nose by the jaws, and the physician says, “That’s HEE-la monster. It’s Spanish. The G sounds like an H.”
