With Strange Brew, Deering -- famous for his biting humor and political savvy as chief editorial cartoonist for the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette -- has an outlet for his creative sense of humor and quirky view of life.
"Being an editorial cartoonist today, you have to be tuned-in to pop culture as well as politics -- but there are some limits to what you can do," Deering says "In Strange Brew, everything’s fair game. I get to cut loose and draw anything."

Yes, the fight had its ups and downs. The result? Don’t know – we’ll just have to sleep on it.

Serious question:
How many years have to pass before one can make jokes about such massacres as Ft Pillow?
I don’t think the WWII Holocaust qualifies yet. Some day it will, even in Israel.
Hannibal, Attila the Hun, Viking raids are fair game.
Custer’s Last Stand is ok. Or is it just because we are not as sympathetic to the losing side?
WWI? Any mustard gas jokes yet?

Fort Pillow

@Donald Williams
Fort Pillow was a massacre of black Northern soldiers and civilians at the hands of Rebels during the Civil War.
Long enough ago to be fair game for jokes?

As a Civil War “student” I hate to admit it, but every timeI read about Ft Pillow this is the picture I first get in my head. (It was named after Gideon Pillow.)

Setting aside the time elapsed since the actual
massacre, it seems the arrows ( indicating a
skirmish with Native Americans ) would make
the insensitivity thing sort of moot, since the
cartoon wasn’t based on the actual incident.
