“Ambiguity make for better stories” – no.
True, many stories started to fail after the protagonists stopped playing games. TV’s “Castle” is a good example.
But there are lots of successful stories revolving around married couples. The real point is: some writers know how to write stories about couples – and some don’t.

Nick and Nora Charles as well as George and Marion Kerby are a good examples of successful couples.

I wasn’t looking at the details that closely, but it looks to me like they’re at the airline counter in the third panel, about to get Evie’s pass.

Doc Martin, now a married man, has come roaring back to life (we saw his honeymoon story last night). Now, that’s one show that’ll never get stale; you can never tell what he, or the goofy denizens of Port Wenn, will do next.

Ambiguity makes for additional story lines.

Seems to me Arnold tossed marriage into a conversation some time back, but made sure it was said lightly, and both he and Evie let it pass.
