Jan Eliot's funny and irreverent Stone Soup follows the saga of an extended, blended family, starring two working-mom sisters living just across the fence from each other. Val and Joan share life with their opinionated mother, a middle-school diva and 10-year-old tomboy, a reclusive teenage boy, a wild preschooler and his new baby sister...and of course Wally, the ultimate nice guy who steps into his stepdad shoes with grace amid the chaos. Working-parent hassles, pre-school tantrums, middle-school angst, love and the single mom... it's all here in Stone Soup.

Go for a drive to check out the stars. I hear there’s a cool comet. Park in a dark spot. Good time to check out the back seat.

I remember one strip where Holly and Alix were discussing Phil with their mom… Things mentioned were whether there would be any prospect of a new brother or sister… And Alix or Holly blurted out, “Got eggs?”…
Mommy’s comment?
“We are not having this conversation…”

Just tell them what you really want to do. They’ll leave quickly, in disgust. No kid wants the mental image of a parent being romantic.

1) That’s when Mom lays down the law and TELLS the girls to go upstairs. 2) Rent a different movie for the girls and send them upstairs to watch it. 3) Just start kissing; the girls will leave. Ew, gross! ;) 4) Val and Phil should just go to the Drive-In! The girls are old enough to be home alone. Aren’t they?

Do you have a recorder?

I would’ve told them to go to bed early tonight (though it’s not a school night) and we’ll negotiate a bonus later, a privilege they don’t normally get. But no way would I allow them to interrupt my date, I’m still the parent!

You’d resort to BRIBERY???

There will be no drive leaving the girls alone.

Let the girls watch the movie and you two go to bed.
