Considering that’s a waning crescent moon (which rises in the wee hours!), it must be shortly before sunrise!

Well spotted! Unfortunately, one cannot count on astronomical accuracy in cartoons. aaving the moon in the frame just indicates general night-time, usually “late.”

Just think of it as a strobe light… (see the B-52’s song about a strobe light) ;-)

Nope, that phase is the waxing cresent, so she’s home pretty early. The waning cresent is turned the othe way.

Phil is a very patient man. He’s put up with a lot for this relationship and not from Val, from her family.

What the heck? What are they, sixteen or something? They should have done this in a car with a bench seat in front of the lake, with the windows all steamed up and a sheriff tapping on the window with a flashlight. But then Val will show up disheveled, with the clothes stretched out and misbuttoned, or whatever and it will be a bad example for her daughters.

Sad to say, a car with a bench seat is long gone, a cop with a 6-cell still exists, but they make so much noise with all the radio chatter and reflective decals, they couldn’t sneak up on a dead moose without tipping off their game.. Such is MY
early experience..Lucky me.. the ignition caught on the first twirl, we left in a cloud of sand, dust and a cop faced the wrong way to turn around and pursue.. Good times, good times….

Are you in the Southern Hemisphere?

Here above the equator, the moon appears along the plane of the Ecliptic (or Zodiac) in the Southern sky, always with the illuminated edge toward the sun. So, a waxing crescent, 1st quarter, or waxing gibbous moon will be lit up on the left (Western) side, as it “follows” the setting sun.

A waning gibbous, last quarter, or waning crescent will “precede” the rising sun, and be illuminated on the right (Eastern) limb. The moon in the comic is illuminated on the left. It resembles the letter C, while the waxing moon, illuminated on the right, resembles a D. A good mnemonic is that the “D moon” is the “Debut” of the lunar cycle and the “C moon” is the “Conclusion”! The Full moon, rising in the East as the sun sets in the West, is “Fully” across the sky from the sun, and in the sky for the “full” night.

Below the equator, these are reversed, with the plane of the Ecliptic in the Northern sky, and East to the left; West to the right.

And now that we all know that, we will ALWAYS recognize and call out the “wrong moon!” in comics and art! Better yet, go outside and observe the moon yourselves. Of course, today is the New moon (which is “NO moon” as it’s passing the sun!) plus, where I am, it’s cloudy and pouring out! But go out on a few clear nights and watch the moon grow and then shrink as it goes through the cycle. [/ removing my Pedantic Astro-Nerd hat now ;)]
