Val: Did you hear? Wally gave Joan a trip to Paris for Christmas! Phil: Yes...he sure raised the bar for the REST of us. Val: You think you'll ever CLEAR that bar? Phil: Take you to Paris? On a policeman's salary? Dream on... Val: Well, maybe I'll hit it big and take YOU. Phil: I could be very happy as a kept man.
Actually, my brother is a policeman. He makes four times what I earn in a job in private industry. Likewise, my mother was a school teacher and she earned a respectable salary, too. I guess it’s all relative. If you’re comparing a policeman’s salary with, say, that of Bill Gates, or a UAW auto worker, it’s pathetic. But if you compare it with the salary of your average working stiff, or the laborers in some Mom and Pop market, it looks pretty darned good.
