Jan Eliot's funny and irreverent Stone Soup follows the saga of an extended, blended family, starring two working-mom sisters living just across the fence from each other. Val and Joan share life with their opinionated mother, a middle-school diva and 10-year-old tomboy, a reclusive teenage boy, a wild preschooler and his new baby sister...and of course Wally, the ultimate nice guy who steps into his stepdad shoes with grace amid the chaos. Working-parent hassles, pre-school tantrums, middle-school angst, love and the single mom... it's all here in Stone Soup.

Just because he COULD do a lot less doesn’t mean he should do a lot LESS

Is Val taking a dig at Phil hinting he should step it up a little? That being said, the Holidays are a great time for Phil to step it up with a ring. ( hint hint Jan )

Oh dear. Here we go with the Val and Phil need to get married thing again.
And I don’t think shes digging at Wally, she knows what a great guy he is for Joan… she remembers Joan’s ex-husband!!!

I agree. I think Val is suggesting that Wally is better than many other men.

You’ve got that right, ‘Glendakan’. There are very, very few ’Wally’s’ around.

Geez! Does she want him to take her sister to Paris or not? Haha.

She’s complimenting him… most guys (sorry guys), wouldn’t be so thoughtful, or mindful of what their wives are doing on a daily basis, especially if they are stay-at-home moms.

It’s really not fair for those people that pop the question during the holiday’s. Legally one shouldn’t because if the engagement is called off the ring could be considered a gift if done during other times the ring is to be returned to the giver. And second if the relationship doesn’t work out, well it kinda ruins the holiday for those people.

And while all this is going on, Max is climbing all over Wally. There’s no greater vote of confidence than the love and trust of a 2 year old. Go Wally!

I do not see what all the brouhaha is about…just go!!!

And now they’re discussing the trip in front of Max? So much for secrecy!
(Yes, I know Max barely talks. Believe me, he will talk in the most inappropriate moment.)

Val’s phrasing makes her sound as if she’s telling Wally he’s doing too much.

" there’s a lot less you COULD do "

Back in highschool ( over 40 years ago ) my then girlfriend and I talked about marriage and kids and getting engaged. She said something that’s stuck with me ever since. If the engagement doesn’t work out and she hands the ring back to you put it on her right hand. You’re never going to give that ring to someone else. If you loved her enough to ask her to marry you and give her a ring, let her keep it.
.
Thats a good reason not to go overboard on a ring.

I know its only a comic and Jan doesn’t age HER characters, it’s the romantic in me that wants the relationship to grow.

The ring can be considered a ‘gift’ at any time of the year. It is symbolic to return it to the giver as a commitment that the relationship in that form is over.
