Jan Eliot's funny and irreverent Stone Soup follows the saga of an extended, blended family, starring two working-mom sisters living just across the fence from each other. Val and Joan share life with their opinionated mother, a middle-school diva and 10-year-old tomboy, a reclusive teenage boy, a wild preschooler and his new baby sister...and of course Wally, the ultimate nice guy who steps into his stepdad shoes with grace amid the chaos. Working-parent hassles, pre-school tantrums, middle-school angst, love and the single mom... it's all here in Stone Soup.

The wife of a cousin of mine posted on Facebook one day a cartoon where a little girl is shockingly dumbfounded by all the sexy for-girls Halloween costumes: vampire, witch, fairy, etc., etc., etc.

Go for the witch outfit, it is much more fitting.

I was a (traditional) nun last year, including three wooden rulers tied to my waist: I used to teach in a couple of Catholic elementary schools before they were shuttered by the diocese. Sadly, no parties that do not conflict with my work schedule this year, so zombie nun will have to wait until next, and will prolly be passé. Bummer.

Yep. Sexy nun, sexy this, sexy that, sexy-the-other-thing.
And in the store where I work, teen-age girls are trying them on by the dozen.

Sounds like your idea of for a costume has become habit forming (re:emjaycee)

Hadn’t realized just how far the sexy Halloween costume thing had gone until 4 years ago when I went to a big outdoor party
Some of the “costumes” looked like they came straight from Victoria’s Secret
Not that I minded, I am a man

That’s fine for someone 18 or so, but how old is Holly suppose to be? Let’s hope her mom can reign her in a bit.

Yes how much can the daughter get away with from the caring parent.

Had to get Halloween costumes for the ten- and twelve-year-old granddaughters yesterday. Something in this or another strip made me think of a thrift store, so I took the girls to a nearby St. Vincent de Paul store. The older one wound up with a half angel/half devil outfit. The top was a lovely diaphonous white with fluffy trim, and the bottom was a jaggedy-hem red skirt with attachable red pointy tail. Wings = one white, one red. Found a nice short-sleeved sweater to keep the top from looking too “sexy.” The younger one was Death, with a hood and thick black netting to cover her face. The costume was black and jaggedy purple. The total bill was about $8.50, and there was a good selection of outfits. I’m now a convert to thrift-store Halloweenin’.

Holly is perpetually 13 or 14 I think. Jan doesn’t age her characters too much. They tend to stay the same.
