Jan Eliot's funny and irreverent Stone Soup follows the saga of an extended, blended family, starring two working-mom sisters living just across the fence from each other. Val and Joan share life with their opinionated mother, a middle-school diva and 10-year-old tomboy, a reclusive teenage boy, a wild preschooler and his new baby sister...and of course Wally, the ultimate nice guy who steps into his stepdad shoes with grace amid the chaos. Working-parent hassles, pre-school tantrums, middle-school angst, love and the single mom... it's all here in Stone Soup.

The kid’s a drummer. No worries, a drummer is just a guy who hangs out with three or four musicians.

I only lived the ’80s for about 5½ years although I know some bands and tunes.

Classics in the 80’s. Those are neo-classics; how ‘bout some thing from the 60’s.

Oh, come on, Ms. Eliot; my 19 and 23-yr olds know the classic music of the 1970s and ‘80s: Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, Sir. Mick and the rest of the Stones, Jethro Tull, etc. The 19-yr-old wants to start playing folk-metal with me.
The rest of you can slag the entire orchestra ’til the cows come home if you want, sometimes with multiple victims per joke, but they’re still not very original.
And yes, I’m a reformed musician: drummer (Irsh bodhran), bones, mandolin, a little guitar, mountain dulcimer, flute, recorder, penny whistles, didjeridu, vocals, a variety of percussion stuff, and I ran sound for the band as well. My former partner (and still friend) is living an wight-hour drive away, darn it. But his new-ish band is opening for the Chieftains next month! Yes, I’m jealous.

If we’re talking 80s New Wave music, there’s no need for a drummer. Practically every “drummer” was a drum machine. ;-D

Sure, do you prefer the 1760s or the 1860s? Or, perchance, the 1560s?

I guess you never heard a jazz drummer play.

I am jealous….You listed at least 9 instruments that you play and I can’t even play the radio.

I love 60’s, 70’s (rock only, NOT disco!) & 80’s new wave & heavy metal. good music beyond the 80’s is very few & far between.

Lighten up on the drummers folks – they’re the guys who keep the rest of the band playing together and on the beat. Even when everyone else wants to run away with the song.

A good drummer makes all the difference in the world! It is so much easier to play when a good drummer is keeping time, and holding the band together. They just have to know how to control their volumn.
