Jan Eliot's funny and irreverent Stone Soup follows the saga of an extended, blended family, starring two working-mom sisters living just across the fence from each other. Val and Joan share life with their opinionated mother, a middle-school diva and 10-year-old tomboy, a reclusive teenage boy, a wild preschooler and his new baby sister...and of course Wally, the ultimate nice guy who steps into his stepdad shoes with grace amid the chaos. Working-parent hassles, pre-school tantrums, middle-school angst, love and the single mom... it's all here in Stone Soup.

ghostkeeper Your parents were probably greatful to the teacher for the lessons you’d learned. The glasses were a small price to pay.
Canoes are easy to tip if you’re sitting in the stern. Reach down and grab the keel, lean over, pulling the canoe with you. Done.
Reminds me of the day we went canoeing just after we got emgaged. We’d had two days of heavy rain and the river was at flood stage. The fire department had put on great shows rescuing canoeists the night before who’d gone all of about half a mile. We went about ten miles when we finally flipped, righted it and kept going. Of course they had to come and rescue us and couldn’t believe that we’d righted the canoe.
And then there’s the canoe we abandoned on top of the mountain near the West Gate in Algonquin Park.

Canoed the Mohican river once, that was wild as heck. Miss those days. Actually did some trolling style fishing with the canoe and my rod n reel.

At first, you’d think Max was gonna say “fudge” like Ralphie in the movie “A Christmas Story.”

Max sat still for 2 seconds. A record for a 2 year old. (or is he 3?)

Typical excitement for a toddler (or a 4 year old).
For a kid that doesn’t say much, at least he got out “fish”.

I think Jan has made Max a year older.

Direct disobedience. When I was a kid, that would have meant a spanking.

He’s not disobeying he’s a toddler who saw f f fish! How exciting even for a grown up, all you old grouches who rather have a spanking. :-p

I love how Phil’s hair is drenched, yet Max’s is still standing up. And the white paddle handles look like bones in the first panel. Hee hee!

My parents rarely did the spanking when we got into trouble, instead they would make us sit in the corner for ten minutes, and later on they would ground us for a week.

I don’t see why people want to spank Max. He was told not to stand up, to stay down. He followed orders. No one said, “Don’t lean over.”
You can’t trust kids that age to keep themselves safe. My coworker told me about a friend who took his two-year-old son up on a roof with him for a bonding experience. Told the kid not to move. Disastrous results. The friend spent months in his bedroom, depressed.

@Gokie5
I dread to ask, but I must. When you say “disastrous” please tell me you do not mean “fatal”. please?
