Jan Eliot's funny and irreverent Stone Soup follows the saga of an extended, blended family, starring two working-mom sisters living just across the fence from each other. Val and Joan share life with their opinionated mother, a middle-school diva and 10-year-old tomboy, a reclusive teenage boy, a wild preschooler and his new baby sister...and of course Wally, the ultimate nice guy who steps into his stepdad shoes with grace amid the chaos. Working-parent hassles, pre-school tantrums, middle-school angst, love and the single mom... it's all here in Stone Soup.

Alix might want to note that Bamboo sharks love meatloaf from the deli.

Spaghetti from a jar? Maybe the spaghetti sauce comes from the jar, but the spaghetti itself is pretty easy for even me to prepare.

First you have to catch your Spaghetti, and then you have to knock him over the head to stun him, and then bleed him, and then…

Mmmmm… Didn’t Phil once cook for Val and the girls?
I think I remember that they were all very impressed with his culinary skills!

There are some brands that have canned spaghetti. With meatballs, to boot!
My mom (rest in peace) taught me to make sauce starting with crushed tomatoes. Thick, hearty, very tasty sauce it was! On the other hand, an uncle of mine (who came from Italy) made his sauce so thin it was like water. That was the way he liked it, and said it was genuine; the thick stuff was all sugar, he said. He’d grow his own vegetables – tomatoes and peppers, particularly. Also made his own wine; had two big casks in his basement for it. Good stuff!

In hot, humid weather, I find I don’t get very hungry.

One more reason for me to love this strip. This is the way I cook. It’s nice to see that Val is kindred spirit in many ways.

I am Italian and my parents have always cooked wonderfully, They taught us all their pasta recipes… amatriciana, fresh tomato sauce, carbonara, pesto, meat sauce, with fried aubergines and ricotta, with mozzarella and raw tomatoes, with courgettes, with parmesan and olive oil, with 4-cheese-sauce, puttanesca.. omg I am getting HUNGRY!
