It wouldn’t hurt for Phil to know about her late husband. He must understand that she still cherishes his memory.

I can’t count Phil as Val’s boyfried as they, presumably, have not nad sex. He may be her male friend, but not boy friend. Val is just refering to Phil as her boy friend to keep other guys away.

Tom was a good guy, who liked to fish, and would take his daughter with him, and teach her things.
    Anything else?

Um, there are people who are romantically involved without falling into bed. And since the Holly is old enough to remember her dad, Phil should know about him Or, perhaps he assumes Val got the kids at a yard sale, or something.

Totally true. It doesn’t require sex.
Some people fall into bed and only neck all night. Yes, that happens.
There is a difference between “making love” and being in love.

That’s a very sad view of boy/girl relationships. According to your definition, my husband will never have been my boyfriend.

Don’t you remember the time Holly teased her for a late-night “booty call?”
