Jan Eliot's funny and irreverent Stone Soup follows the saga of an extended, blended family, starring two working-mom sisters living just across the fence from each other. Val and Joan share life with their opinionated mother, a middle-school diva and 10-year-old tomboy, a reclusive teenage boy, a wild preschooler and his new baby sister...and of course Wally, the ultimate nice guy who steps into his stepdad shoes with grace amid the chaos. Working-parent hassles, pre-school tantrums, middle-school angst, love and the single mom... it's all here in Stone Soup.

No, they just don’t share the same interest.
In fact, her mom is extremely supportive, hence the science camp. Way to go Val! It would be great if all parents were in tune with their kids interests and try to guide them in the right direction. Instead of living vicariously living THROUGH them.

I agree! I always wanted a set of Matchbox cars and a racing track when I was younger, but was disappointed to never get them. My youngest is into cheerleading and dance, which I’m totally not, but I take her to practice 3 times a week and pay a bunch of money for it. But just because I’m not excited about putting makeup and glitter on a 6 year old doesn’t mean I’m not supportive.

Exactly! Her mom has done what she can to give Alix what she needs, and has always worked at keeping Holly’s snarkiness from discouraging Alix. Being a working mom isn’t easy, but I’d say Val is amazingly supportive, and carefully not imposing her own views on the kids.
