Jan Eliot's funny and irreverent Stone Soup follows the saga of an extended, blended family, starring two working-mom sisters living just across the fence from each other. Val and Joan share life with their opinionated mother, a middle-school diva and 10-year-old tomboy, a reclusive teenage boy, a wild preschooler and his new baby sister...and of course Wally, the ultimate nice guy who steps into his stepdad shoes with grace amid the chaos. Working-parent hassles, pre-school tantrums, middle-school angst, love and the single mom... it's all here in Stone Soup.

Poor Val…

Nah, the story is all in the panels. Wally looked like he was being too casual—-like he was just passing the time. (Leaning on the fence is a ‘visit’) And a single, working mom is going to be thinking first and foremost how overwhelmed she is…so his comment WOULD have sounded to her like a criticism. The woman barely has time to think. Wally COULD have simply spit out: “Hey Val! Allow me and Andy to help you with the lawn.”
And btw, if Phil is supposed to be involved with Val, why isn’t he being a devoted boyfriend, and helping out with the ‘guy stuff’??

The girls are home for the summer. They could push a lawn mower as well.

I don;t know – with all those muscles Holly will have after camp, she should be able to do that lawn in nothing flat. And sooner a sheep than a horse – take it from me!

@Jenn
I agree with what you said. Wally was wrong on how wording his sentence. Val is overwhelmed. Why ask just volunteer and help with Andy.

I don’t blame Val for getting mad at Wally.

So once again its all the mans fault. As far as Phil does Val help clean his house?

i don’t blame val for jumping down wally’s throat ….although i love her expression in the 6th panel (next to last). open mouth, insert foot and chew well.

If you waited for my nieces to get off their behinds and stop talking on the phone long enough to do something constructive like mowing the lawn, it would get that tall before they got to it. Sha once took so long to finish mowing the lawn that by the time she was done, it was ready to mow again at the other end.

So, Val, how does your foot taste right now?

Note Andy cheerfully helping with the lawn. Of course Phil is out there too, which may have something to do with that.
