Jan Eliot's funny and irreverent Stone Soup follows the saga of an extended, blended family, starring two working-mom sisters living just across the fence from each other. Val and Joan share life with their opinionated mother, a middle-school diva and 10-year-old tomboy, a reclusive teenage boy, a wild preschooler and his new baby sister...and of course Wally, the ultimate nice guy who steps into his stepdad shoes with grace amid the chaos. Working-parent hassles, pre-school tantrums, middle-school angst, love and the single mom... it's all here in Stone Soup.

Hey Holly, better watch out! I think your mum might be thinking about buying YOUR clothes from boys’ section also…

I don’t think boys clothes are cheaper, Maybe it’s because of the patches!

What I can not figure out is paying more money for pants that are already ripped. That is just plain STUPID.

I quite agree. But Alix is happy with the clothes, so at least you got the shopping done.

Every parent knows that boys clothes are cheaper. My 32 year old daughter who is 5’ tall still checks that section for bargains for herself.

Why aren’t they at the Goodwill? Everything’s cheaper. Until they stop growing, children need very few new clothes.

Mashallaharabians, boy are you right! I used to work as an assistant to a paint contractor, my work jeans looked like they lost a fight with Jackson Pollock and barely escaped from Freddy Krueger. One day, I went to a large shopping mall in the nearest big city, one of the stores was selling pairs of jeans that looked just like my work jeans! Who in their right mind would buy that?

Alix can probably be happy with one pair of shoes, as well (well, not including flip-flops).

I don’t know…now that I’m actually DRESSING a boy, I can’t say the basics are any cheaper. (Jeans, tees, etc.) Fancy stuff like dress clothes, maybe–but also harder to find since the girls’ section is twice as big.

People who want to look like they’ve worked as hard as you actually have?

uconn88: I went to school in the “olden days”, and things were very simple. Boys had to wear long pants, and girls had to wear dresses or skirts, period. Not a private school or anything - this was standard dress policy in the California school system once upon a time. Any girl of any age coming to school in pants would have been sent home immediately. You’ll notice in the old TV comedies, like “Leave It To Beaver” or “Father Knows Best”, the wives always wore dresses. They were “good” women”.

in terms of dress codes,
why is it that bathing suits are appropriate,
like at the beach,
or at the pool,
while underwear is’nt?

We have uniforms here. You buy them before high school.

2 against 1 (raw numbers only), looks like you got outvoted Holly (reality: 3 against 1, since Val’s vote is “multiplied” due to her holding the moneys)
Kaero, it seems you missed a point with your comment about “fancy dress items”–basically, these are generally anathema to boys, so…
