Jan Eliot's funny and irreverent Stone Soup follows the saga of an extended, blended family, starring two working-mom sisters living just across the fence from each other. Val and Joan share life with their opinionated mother, a middle-school diva and 10-year-old tomboy, a reclusive teenage boy, a wild preschooler and his new baby sister...and of course Wally, the ultimate nice guy who steps into his stepdad shoes with grace amid the chaos. Working-parent hassles, pre-school tantrums, middle-school angst, love and the single mom... it's all here in Stone Soup.

Serves Mrs. Stone right for giving her daughter a boyish name.

Alix in a dress? Never. She is a real Tomboy;) And Mom is just happy to find something Alix likes.

Good point Josh; though Holly did not mean her statement as a suggestion, it works just fine to actually get Alix some new clothes.
Josh 1360 said, 2 months ago
True, so Alix can stop all that constant whinning.

Now is she after boys’ clothes or after boys? Maybe she’s growing up after all.

I like Mom’s content look on the last panel.

Alix should meet a boy in the boys department tomorrow. Not romantically, but it will tick off her sister.

“Alix” is not a boy’s name–it’s short for Alexandra, or Alexa or such. And what’s that got to do with personal tastes?
This is straight from my own family–only it’s my older daughter who eschews the “pink and sparkly” and tends to prefer the boys department stuff. And she does NOT have a “boy’s” name–her name is a common girl’s one!

This is so funny. I have to adult kids boy and girl. When they where small my daughter would actually go where her brothers clothes. Son is older then sister by 3 years.

This story line has been different inasmuch as Alix is usually easy-going. It’s usually Holly that’s being difficult. This could be the beginning of adolescence for Alix. Poor Mom! Lots of clothing now is unisex.

Even though there is age difference between the girls, what about hand me downs. Alix ought to be happy, her mom could take her to garage sale for clothes. My mine did that to my sister and I. It was a nightmare. My mom was too tight to buy clothes. Even today its hard for her to buy new clothes. My mom is fortunate she is small enough she does not outgrown clothes. I cannot say this for myself:(

I buy the majority of my clothes in the men’s department, because the stuff they have in the “Plus” section are so ugly! I also can’t stand pink or sparkly. For us tomboys, guys’ clothes are so much more comfortable to wear!

Isn’t the boys/mens’ stuff cheaper than the girlie items?
iamtxmilady said, 2 months ago
exactly, lleray. that’s whay val looks happy about it
lucereta said, 2 months ago
I’d say Val is also happy because Alix is going for what she wants, not just what the clothing manufacturers tell her she should want. Not that there’s anything wrong with pink and sparkly, but if she doesn’t like it, she has other options. Good for her!
