Jan Eliot's funny and irreverent Stone Soup follows the saga of an extended, blended family, starring two working-mom sisters living just across the fence from each other. Val and Joan share life with their opinionated mother, a middle-school diva and 10-year-old tomboy, a reclusive teenage boy, a wild preschooler and his new baby sister...and of course Wally, the ultimate nice guy who steps into his stepdad shoes with grace amid the chaos. Working-parent hassles, pre-school tantrums, middle-school angst, love and the single mom... it's all here in Stone Soup.

Holly, you are a brave girl pulling the “you’re old” routine when your mother has a knife in her hands.

Why did what Val was doing make her old? She’s pretty young if she can get on her knees to do that. I couldn’t!

Macush–she called her old because she was wasting a beautiful summer day on weeding,. The weeds WILL be back but the day is gone forever—enjoy life

True, true. Something we all need to remember, no matter our age. But I think the “you’re old” routine won’t work every day.

Next time Val, spray those weeds with weed killer it would be easier & you could pull them out the following day!

For her rudeness, the OLDest child should have had to stay home.

lightenup how have you been? Instead of making this another chat room, you can go to Big Top to answer me.

What Val should have done was hand the garden tools to Holly. That would shut her up.

We don’t have a lake by us. I drive to a lake west of us every day and I don’t care about going nor do I care about pulling weeds.

Try pouring boiling water on those weeds in the cracks. It works, is much faster and you’ll have time for the lake.

I didn’t know boiling water works. Just boiling water I asked my husband he mentioned salt too. How about chemicals sprays that kills weeds?

If you have pets or small children, don’t use chemicals. If you want your paving to last (or have grass or other plants beside the paving that you want), don’t use salt. Boiling water works, and so does cheap white vinegar.
