Jan Eliot's funny and irreverent Stone Soup follows the saga of an extended, blended family, starring two working-mom sisters living just across the fence from each other. Val and Joan share life with their opinionated mother, a middle-school diva and 10-year-old tomboy, a reclusive teenage boy, a wild preschooler and his new baby sister...and of course Wally, the ultimate nice guy who steps into his stepdad shoes with grace amid the chaos. Working-parent hassles, pre-school tantrums, middle-school angst, love and the single mom... it's all here in Stone Soup.

My folks used to take me to wild mountain lakes and out on all day live bait boats from the Redondo Beach pier. That was such a blast! And doesn’t that girl understand she can meet some cool boys in places like this?

Haven’t you ever had to check yourself for bloodsucking leeches? Maybe she has.. and found one OR MORE (I know I have - ewww). I know they can be used in a medical situation, but I’d be closing my eyes during the procedure.
I would still dive in though - it’s hot outdoors & the water looks so inviting. Enjoy your holiday weekend (and have someone else look between your toes when you get out of the water).

I’m with Holly, I wouldn’t want to get in that dirty water with the creepies in it. I guess we’re just spoiled.

Kids don’t know the world the way we saw it. My daughter asked her youngest son (13) to take the dog for a walk around the yard and he said ” What’s a yard?” But he knows what tweet, twitter, texting and omg are. It’s sort of sad:(

Surburban girl Holly can’t take “roughing it ” rural style in the good ol’ swimming hole! Suprised that she didn’t complained about the MOSQUITOES in the swimming hole! Note to Alix, Aqua socks as well as Water Sports Sandals work better than a pair of “flip flops” (thong or slide) & safer too (in case if a crawdad crawls over you foot!)

I never did like the feel of slimy rocks under my feet. Good enough to watch the water-skippers by the side of the brook. Me, I preferred to swim in my own lightly-chlorinated pool.

Just got back from two days camping in the mountains. Went through creeks and ponds, loving seeing all of the creatures listed above. The Zen of it is something that will forever, all too sadly, be lost on Holly.

If God had not wanted us to go backpacking, he/she would not have invented tents, sleeping bags, backpacks, etc…!
