Jan Eliot's funny and irreverent Stone Soup follows the saga of an extended, blended family, starring two working-mom sisters living just across the fence from each other. Val and Joan share life with their opinionated mother, a middle-school diva and 10-year-old tomboy, a reclusive teenage boy, a wild preschooler and his new baby sister...and of course Wally, the ultimate nice guy who steps into his stepdad shoes with grace amid the chaos. Working-parent hassles, pre-school tantrums, middle-school angst, love and the single mom... it's all here in Stone Soup.

But they couldn’t afford the lifeguard. Start digging those graves.

Val, haven’t you figured out Holly’s plan (to basically be present in school until 16th birthday, then quit) yet?

And if she does that she will be stuck at a minimum wage job all her life. She better wake up and get on the ball about her studies, go to college and make something of herself.

Would you like fries with that?

Well Macush, I never mentioned that Holly had figured out the bugs/flaws in her plan.

I have a novel idea, why don’t Val and Grandma sit down with Holly and work with her? They could ground her and the better she does the more time she gets to “goof off”.
Nah, makes too much sense……….

We can’t all be educated. Somebody has got to do actual work.

DiceR - I’d agree if we were talking college, but this is high school. There aren’t many jobs for high school dropouts, especially ones Holly would be willing to do.

Are there any jobs Holly would do willingly/

Parental involvement in their child’s education? What could you be thinking, that’s the government and the teacher’s union job. (or at least according to them it is)
