Jan Eliot's funny and irreverent Stone Soup follows the saga of an extended, blended family, starring two working-mom sisters living just across the fence from each other. Val and Joan share life with their opinionated mother, a middle-school diva and 10-year-old tomboy, a reclusive teenage boy, a wild preschooler and his new baby sister...and of course Wally, the ultimate nice guy who steps into his stepdad shoes with grace amid the chaos. Working-parent hassles, pre-school tantrums, middle-school angst, love and the single mom... it's all here in Stone Soup.

EVERYONE should have 3-6 months cash to tide them over. (I know, I didn’t either before my layoff)

Ramen noodles, boiled eggs and frozen veggies–that’ll slash your food bills greatly for awhile (admittedly, selling Max on that will be difficult).

Any extra money we get in goes straight to bills, highest interest first. We’ve done this for awhile and have some breathing room, alas still more to pay but, just not so much. Now only if that van PCH would pull into my driveway.

switch to rice instead of ramen. cheap and way healthier.

Not necessarily. Ramen Noodles are some of my kids favorite meals. Add a can of corn, and some fruit on the side and you have a decent meal, which my kids request at least twice a week.

If he wasn’t a liberal and owned a shotgun, they could have rabbit for supper.

I stand corrected ldyhwkd.
Or (for dmh) another idea would be to use regular (generic) pasta. Cook pasta, hard-boil eggs (and bin the yolks) sauté frozen mixed vegetables–mix the veggies with the pasta to make “Macedonian Pasta” and serve with egg as side. Excellent on protein (egg-white, also lima-beans and peas), low fat, inexpensive.
(note: “Macedonian” pilfered from the Québecois French for mixed-vegetables being “macédonie de légumes”)
(btw, binning the sauce packet from Ramen noodles–as I did when I bought them, due to these oft containing beef-extract–will give same result as using generic pasta)

What’s everyone talking about?
My company is hiring left and right.
We need at least 50 more people - we grew 25% last year and are on a 20% track this year.
