Jan Eliot's funny and irreverent Stone Soup follows the saga of an extended, blended family, starring two working-mom sisters living just across the fence from each other. Val and Joan share life with their opinionated mother, a middle-school diva and 10-year-old tomboy, a reclusive teenage boy, a wild preschooler and his new baby sister...and of course Wally, the ultimate nice guy who steps into his stepdad shoes with grace amid the chaos. Working-parent hassles, pre-school tantrums, middle-school angst, love and the single mom... it's all here in Stone Soup.

Every generation firmly believes that they set a standard of cool that won’t ever be topped.
SchmoozeMinkey said, 8 months ago
And that AIN’T cool, ej.

Nothing wrong with being cool at any age.

This one reminds me of an old Mad Magazine piece where a 1960’s raised hippie couple wind up having children who channel 1920’s–but the couple’s grandchildren channel the hippy movement…in the last panel of that one, as teenage grandchildren greet their grandparents (who come in on a Kawasaki 900-cc), there is much gladness.

…and without fail, that standard looks totally lame the very next decade.

One can be “cool” at any age. When I go out my grandson says “grandma is going out to boogie”. Don’t know where he got that idea but I love it. P.S> I’m 70.

The turning point of life; when you reach the realization just how “cool” mom and dad really are/were.

::waves hi! to Drystyha:: (I loved studying so-bright ravens years ago, hence the avatar - glad you like it!) Joan and Val envious of MOM!!! ~gasp~ Shouldn’t they be in competition with gals their age, or is it that old devvul Oedipus running amok again…..??? (hey, do guys feel competitive with their dads as well?)

arceedee, what do you mean studying? are you a bird watcher?

Drystyha: yes we watch birds these days in our northeast home (NJ), (mostly loads of grackles & starlings chasing away the cardinals, titmice, goldfinches, orioles etc, lol… ) When I was in college one winter a professor took some students on day trips to snowy NE areas to watch/record raven behavior, she shared her own research, slides & stories (they like to hangout in the snow!)((the ravens that is, not the professors :)))

arceedee, so you get the cold and snow too? I have loads of birds around right now. I especially like the morning doves, who I guess mate for life, and the little wrens and robins!

DRYSTYHA!!!! I am *so* happy to meet another mourning dove lover! Here in NJ, there are many NYC people who dislike them as they do city pigeons, noisy and messy. I welcome the cooing pairs of doves outside my kitchen window (Gretel & Harry, Marge and Ed….) I saw my first spring robin this week, but we get no wrens.

arceedee, You know what I love about this site? You can talk to people you don’t really know, and get a smile from it (most of the time!) Wrens are so cute! Having watched them, the females rule the roost! IF they don’t like something, like a twig he brings to the nest, she will throw it out and he’ll bring in another one until she’s satisfied! Comical to watch!
I love how you named your doves!
