Jan Eliot's funny and irreverent Stone Soup follows the saga of an extended, blended family, starring two working-mom sisters living just across the fence from each other. Val and Joan share life with their opinionated mother, a middle-school diva and 10-year-old tomboy, a reclusive teenage boy, a wild preschooler and his new baby sister...and of course Wally, the ultimate nice guy who steps into his stepdad shoes with grace amid the chaos. Working-parent hassles, pre-school tantrums, middle-school angst, love and the single mom... it's all here in Stone Soup.

Waiter on the Way, may I help you?

Agree with ejcapulet–Holly and Alix shouldn’t even bother counting, use one of mum’s credit cards (or ATM card) and start dialling!

Sweaty eggplant is good! That just means the salt is releasing all the bitter liquid that makes people hate eggplant. Trust me, Val is on the right track. Let’s just see if she stays on it…

Double pepperoni with beef, onions, olives, and bell peppers, please.

Nobody gives poor Val any credit. I hope this recipe works out well and everyone loves it! Just to show them. :)

Tell grandma quickly, she will help pay for pizza.

I hate it when someone who is a bad cook “tries out a new recipe” and wants me to be a guinea pig.
prasrinivara said, 9 months ago
For RRAMom – there is something even worse here, that of inviting people over and using them as guinea-pigs; it wouldn’t quite be so bad if Val tried it out on Alix & Holly only.
IMO, Val should have treated them out (such as to OCB?).
Cruz4him, I texted your response to my wife; her reply was “only if the chef is of Indian/Persian/Meditteranean descent OR the brinjal is a small kind such as Indian/Japanese”–DOUBLY out!

Well Wally and Joan were already going after Chinese food so they won’t be there. So if Holly and Alix don’t get the pizza they’re stuck. I hope Val likes the eggplant she may be eating it all by herself.

Hurry before she gets to the vinegar and soy sauce.
Then they’ll start sweating

I love Val’s look of sheer delight at her discovery!

Slugs “sweat” when you salt them too. Both should not be eaten. Eggplant is related to tobacco and deadly-nightshade. The FDA should investigate!

The eggplant is also related to the tomato, potato, capsicum pepper and petunia.
Solanaceae is a very diverse and widely spread family of flowering plants.
