Jan Eliot's funny and irreverent Stone Soup follows the saga of an extended, blended family, starring two working-mom sisters living just across the fence from each other. Val and Joan share life with their opinionated mother, a middle-school diva and 10-year-old tomboy, a reclusive teenage boy, a wild preschooler and his new baby sister...and of course Wally, the ultimate nice guy who steps into his stepdad shoes with grace amid the chaos. Working-parent hassles, pre-school tantrums, middle-school angst, love and the single mom... it's all here in Stone Soup.

Should’ve just gone for roses.

Send the orchid over here, Joan. I have more time than you do.

That’s funny- the only time I’ve ever been able to keep a plant alive is when I had a nursling! Maybe it was something about nursing the baby that reminded me to water my plants…

well, maybe he can take care of it himself, why should it necessarily be she?

Give me an orchid over roses anyday–my orchid blooms for a couple of months every year–roses are done in a week.

We always joke that I have the ‘black thumb of death’ with orchids. Don’t know why, but they don’t do well in our house. I have other house plants that live quite happily. Go figure?

That’s why I like cut flowers - I don’t feel guilty when they wilt and die.

This is funny because I’ve always liked giving live plants better than cut flowers. I just have an issue with giving flowers to express my feelings, knowing they will only last a few days. (The flowers that is, feelings last longer)

Poor Wally. At least his heart was in the right place.

Pheobedog - maybe you can offer me some advice. I received an orchid serveral years ago. It gets indirect light, I feed it “weakly weekly” and all I get are leaves.

ITA, doc. I’d rather receive a plant.

I’d suggest they start with a Wandering Jew - they take neglect pretty well. I can kill cacti, but I can keep my Wandering Jew alive.

Poor Wally indeed. I just hope he doesn’t know what an orchid is the symbol for.

I have to read this strip twice, once for the main story and once for the subtext with the kids. Love it. Reminds me of the old fashioned strips….
