Jan Eliot's funny and irreverent Stone Soup follows the saga of an extended, blended family, starring two working-mom sisters living just across the fence from each other. Val and Joan share life with their opinionated mother, a middle-school diva and 10-year-old tomboy, a reclusive teenage boy, a wild preschooler and his new baby sister...and of course Wally, the ultimate nice guy who steps into his stepdad shoes with grace amid the chaos. Working-parent hassles, pre-school tantrums, middle-school angst, love and the single mom... it's all here in Stone Soup.

If Wally’s Jewish, does that mean Joan converted? What about the kids?

there’s a difference between being religious and being spiritual. One is full of feeling and the other weighted with rules.

That is so true. I have always said God made man and man made religion.

You’re right mfboyd. True spirituality is about a relationship with God, not obeying a bunch of rules. But no matter what faith you are everyone loves good things to eat at holiday time.

Nozzi, you are right. And if there were no yummy donuts there would be no reason for living. Hence no need for religion. So I guess we need them both lol.

Why would Joan convert? I have an uncle whose wife is Jewish; he didn’t convert to her’s, and she didn’t convert to his Catholicism; they’re still quite happily married, and retired to Las Vegas (apparently, the new Florida!). My two cousins by them are all grown up with families of their own, and didn’t let religion become an issue either.

It’s only the second day! He has too many candles lit! Donuts have nothing to do w/ it!

Mkim 1526 why does it matter that they’re Jewish? I didn’t know Joan wasn’t but I didn’t start reading this til after she and Wally were married.

I’ve always assumed Val and Joan were Jewish, but I can’t recall what basis I had for that. But really, why can’t they make these things clear? They should put little yellow six-pointed stars next to the strips with Jewish characters, like the pink triangle they use for Jane’s World and the Canadian Content Warning that pops up on For Better Or For Worse. While we’re on the subject, why does Irving celebrate Christmas with Cathy?

mimers, Alix said donuts

Probably for the same reason that I (a Pagan) celebrate Christmas with my family. I’m celebrating their celebration, not the Holiday itself. (It’s not my holiday, but I’m glad that it’s a special moment for them and I’m glad to join them for it.)

Um, several things here …
1) Donuts and potato latkes also symbolize the miracle of the oil (both are made using oil)
2) He is lighting a full menorah since very likely this will be the only Hanukkah strip – one would assume the rest will be devoted to Christmas
3)I grew up Jewish, my wife Catholic. Our boys celebrate both and enjoy all aspects of both holidays.

–um, wy, are we back in the 1940’s in Germany that we need these designations?

I suppose it’s true what they say: “Satire is defined as what people don’t get.”

Somehow I knew from something that was said long ago but I don’t mind one bit. It is nice to know what the other holidays are about.
My only problem is Yahoo has dropped this story line and replaced it with something else. I read and follow this set of Comic strips cause I LIKE the way Jan Eliot does it. THANKS Eliot! BOOO bad Yahoo!
