I saw “Up with Cris Hayes” on MSNBC (Saturday edition) and he was talking about the “ritual” the U.S. goes trough every time something like this happens. And he’s darn right. These mass-shootings and amok-runs have become so commonplace that it’s basically clear what every participant in social live (Reps, Dems, NRA, “Liberal” media) is going to say, you don’t even have to listen anymore. And it’s also clear that nothing is going to change. It’s so frustrating i could start an amok-run! Just kidding, badly. Thankfully I live in Germany where we don’t have these things so often because – among other things – we don’t have a second amendment…

    -

But there’s one more thing Chris pointed out and I’d like to repeat: the guy in the theater was able to buy – legally – tear gas canisters for crowd control! Why? Why is that allowed? And why – on the other side – is it NOT allowed to buy a surface-to-air missile? If – as the TEA-party claims – the second amendment is there to keep the government in check that would be a much better weapon then some AR-15, right? This very clever thought was that of Chris Hayes, not mine, credit where credit is due…

With 30 + gun deaths EVERY DAY in the U.S. on average, WHY does it take SOME NUT, to make people at all aware???

Efforts to control magazine size of “civilian” weapons, has been blocked by NRA, as have restrictions on “armor piercing” bullets. Also, the NRA has blocked the banning of selling body armor to civilians. What does ANY of that have to do with “hunting rifles”, or for that matter, civilians who are NOT part of that “well-regulated militia”??

Rifles and shotguns should be limited to 5 round capacity, period, to match hunting regulations. Pistols should be limited to 12 rounds, such as with 9mm in “standard” format, or 8 as with my .45. There is NO civilian excuse to have 50 round magazines for rifles or 20+ for pistols. Those “in-between” weapons like Uzi, and other “military” application weapons, have no legitimate use in “civilian” hands.

The “Bank of America shootout” in Los Angeles is perfect rationale for restricting body armor and high capacity magazines. “Bad guys”, should NOT be able to “out gun” military or police units.

Those who feel they must be able to “defend themselves” from “government”, should move to Syria, or Sudan, Yemen, or Republican of the Congo, where such ludicrous insanity, wouldn’t be.

So much for “The Christian Nation”. If it truly is, why then do we need weapons at all. Christ didn’t ask us to be armed to the teeth, but to love others as ourselves.

The Alex Jones, he was under government mind control so they can take away our guns theory, got left out of the cartoon.

We are an Opportunist nation. The problem is that we lost our moral compass as a community despite all religious teachings.

There are certain firearms (and magazines) that have no legitimate use for the average citizen, whether for hunting target shooting, or personal defense. These should be banned. Period. There should be a federal registration and a buy-back program for existing guns and magazines. After that, possession would (depending on the case) bring prison time and/or a serious fine, and loss of the “right” to own a firearm.

I own a Remington 870 like the shooter used. As a “home defense”, i can assure that if a burglar is in my house, just the sound of “racking” a round, will cost me a window, or whatever he might be closest to for an “exit”.

Had to make a car stop once on bank robbers being pursued by other agencies. When they came around the corner and saw two shotguns aimed at them, the “gentle suggestion” to surrender over my P.A., stopped them cold, and got full cooperation. “Bad guys” know what a shotgun can do, which is something most folks didn’t think about, when distracted by the simple “assault rifle” being even intimated. A 12 gauge shotgun, at close to medium range, is FAR more effective as a “killing machine”.

Which is where many “anti-gun” folks show they do NOT know firearms.

    .
Good old Chris “I am uncomfortable calling dead soldiers heroes” Hayes. Wonder how some would feel if he said that about police, or firefighters or anyone else who risks their life for this nation.
    .
I am sure Chris Hayes and his group love the idea of gun control. I know Hitler did. Gun control laws helped the Nazis suppress political dissidents and round up German Jews for extermination. They were an excellent policy choice for a government that learned it no longer needed to fear.
    .
I do not think it is unreasonable for people to keep guns, the 2nd Amendment was specific to allowing individuals to keep guns, not simply for hunting either. I suggest you read DC v Heller as to both what needs to be done and a the limits thereof….
    .
“But as we have said, the conception of the militia at the time of the Second Amendment’s ratification was the body of all citizens capable of military service, who would bring the sorts of lawful weapons that they possessed at home”

And I’m sure that Morty’s point eluded you. Just to take it down a notch, why WAS it permitted for a private citizen to buy tear-gas bombs?

“And why – on the other side – is it NOT allowed to buy a surface-to-air missile?”
    .
Because it’s rated as a Weapon of Mass Destruction. It is not a firearm. Every single missile the US has belongs to the Military and no one else. That means that the order to use them belongs to the Commander-in-Chief: our President.
    .
One of the reasons that that….. person… was able to buy firearms and such was his age. Only those of legal majority (and that differs from State to State, but most start at 21) are allowed to buy firearms. Probably the other reason is his record – or lack of one. As for his motive? Maybe we’ll find out in the next few days, or maybe when he goes to Court.
    .
Besides, I prefer how NBC is handling things: they’re focusing more on the victims of this tragedy rather than the perpetrator.

That’s because we are not a “Christian” nation. Go find the “Treaty of Friendship signed at Tripoli”, signed by the Adams (the 2nd President, not the 4th)….
    .
Calling America a “Christian” nation insults every citizen (including myself) who is not a Christian. My ancestors, four brothers who founded the township of Culpsville, PA, came here because of religious persecution in Germany. (They were Mennonites.)
    .
Mind you, I’m all for Freedom of Religion. I don’t mind it if you call yourself a Christian. Just don’t apply it in general to MY Country.
