I hate to point this out, but when has any foreign-state-imposed puppet ever performed its task to its master’s liking? It’s almost always boomeranged sooner or later.

Looks like we are going to be in Afghanistant for a long time. With the Republicans recent victories the Democrats will never have the courge to do the right thing and get out.

Years from now we will have lost many lives, wasted our resources, and still have to stay because things will be such a mess.

You’re such a genius prophet, KW. The rest of us can only stand in awe of your prescience…

I have no idea what the final outcome in Afghanistan will be. Unlike the Soviets or any other previous “invader”, the US truly does not have any interest in either conquering or subjugating Afghanistan. We are bending over backwards to work with the Afghan populace, help them, enlist their help, train their armies to defend their own country, etc

No idea if all this girlish Peace Corps junk will work out for us in the end. It might. It might not. But at least i don’t pretend to know that we WILL fail, that’s for sure.

Scott – Of course none of us knows (rolls eyes). But the precedent set by numerous other empires don’t offer any glimmer of hope that it’ll turn out any better/different for us.

Afghanistan is nothing but a sink-hole for Blood and Treasure.

Sink-hole for blood and treasure and endless opportunities for the generation of wealth.

Lalas, having travelled there, I suspect that to its residents, Afghanistan is rather more than a «sink-hole for Blood and Treasure» (of certain foreigners), or indeed, than «endless opportunities for the generation of wealth» for other, more well-connected persons. To them, I dare say, it is home, «the place», in the words of the poet, «where, when you have to go there, they have to take you in». Those who don’t regard it as such have no business attempting to determine the destinies of that country….
