    Martens, nature and foreign affairs abhor a vacuum. If the US isn’t going to be the referee an cop then somebody else will be. That somebody else is likely to be a lot worse than the US has been at it too.

    Aren’t you concerned about 17 trillions of dollars of debt? How will we finance a worldwide fire brigade? How is it we have no resources to take care of our own society, but we have unlimited resources to help others?

    @I Play One On TV

    Well, the Roman Empire started out as a republic. One of the ways they got the empire was responding to other nation-state’s pleas for help. So they would send a general with a legion or three, and afterward the nation-state calling for help owed Rome. And the Romans were big on collecting. Legions were, after all, expensive, and generals liked to have something to retire on (in luxury). So revenue started flowing Rome’s way. Failure to keep up payments would bring the legions back, and the Romans would be running things thereafter.

    We could adapt that model and things might get paid for. It does call for a certain ruthlessness. If bandits (or terrorists) were operating out of another country and attacking Roman provinces or allies, the Romans crossed borders and “took names” as the Brits say…

    We, of course, would never do something like that according to some ignorant fools. Drones firing missiles in other countries clearly is not “taking names.”

    Sometimes it was cheaper for Rome to buy off people. The smart ones would stay bought, mostly. Of course, we would never do something like that and call it “foreign aid.”

    We could be like the Romans. We could, like them, leave people to worship their own gods. Of course we might require them to worship our god, (which despite right wing fools’ opinions is not the president) the Almighty Dollar of Corporate Profit.

    We arm our military with gasoline hoses suppled by the military industrial complex, with backing from chickenhawk legislators, executives, and their puppetmasters.

    If the purpose is to intervene and stop the carnage, why do we call our major weapon: “FIRE power”??

    Toon is correct, but are Sam’s backers really dismayed?

    Doesn’t “Fighting for Peace” make about just as much sense as “Screwing for Virginity”??

    @Baslim the begger says, "The past is the enemy of the future."

    So, in essence, the US becomes another state’s bodyguard, protecting them for a price. Interesting concept.

    Although that goes against my grain, it’s better than being an UNPAID bodyguard, I suppose. And the alternatives we have used have hurt us and have hardly benefitted those we “helped”.

    " But peace brings prosperity and that is what we would bring."
    Your not old enough to remember when the Vietnam “police action” ended and all the soldiers and support personnel came home, there was a depression as many of the War corporations laid off workers when the government contracts were canceled.
    Reagan was still trying to get us out of that recession, years later.
    Peace only brings prosperity (whatever that means to you) when something good is being produced, or something bad is being destroyed and replaced.
    {this is really too complex for a proper discussion on a comments thread}

    The US wants to think well of itself (well, who doesn’t?) and therefore pictures itself as either a global policeman (if you like policemen) or the global firefighter (even more benign). In truth, the US has a long history of supporting viciously repressive regimes around the world. (I’m happy to go into detail if anyone doubts this.)
