    @Debt Free

    No, guns being used on innocent bystanders in large numbers is what drives us insane.

    Then enforce the laws so gang bangers don’t kill people. Put them in jail……for a very long time. Stop punishing those of us that are law abiding citizens. Stop passing laws, that will not be enforced, and have NO effect on criminals and their activities.

    The EXTREME vast majority of lawful firearms owners are not irresponsible – despite what HuffPo, MSNBC, and others will have you believe.

    But you knew that.

    Odd that Benson should base the cartoon on the Life Magazine photo of Lee that appeared to be tampered with.

    Once again we hear all about how sensible attempts at preventing felons, the mentally ill, and such like from stocking up on AK 47s with fully loaded magazines and “full auto” firing capacity is, somehow, " . . . punishing law abiding citizens". What a crock of . . . .!
    ^
    But then again, with the level of intelligence in those who see sensible restrictions being just about that of taking off one’s shoes to count above 10, what can one expect?
    ^
    @Joadtom,
    That’s one of the stupidest statements I’ve read here in a long time. Just exactly what was “crazy liberal” in the Metro-Denver theater shooting? Or the several recent cases of shooting up schools, and killing teachers and children? Is that kind of thing your idea of “gun ownership and use”?
    ^
    Anyone with the common sense of a cockroach knows better!

    The usual straw man arguments coming from the right. There are a few liberals who want to ban all guns, but most of us believe the Second Amendment gives us the right to have guns for protection, sport & hunting.

    What is insane, is that even the most reasonable attempt to have universal background checks or waiting periods, is met with utter contempt & rejection. The idea isn’t to ban guns, just make it harder for criminals & crazies to get them. Local gun laws are useless when guns are easily bought over a border.

    The NRA is the biggest threat to the Second Amendment.Their fundamentalist interpretation makes overturning it seem like the only course.

    50 years later,communists and other leftists can still get guns and have killed millions of their political opposition world wide.Oswald was an avowed communist.

    @Uncle Joe

    You’re complaining of straw man arguments on a toon that uses a straw man argument that if guns were illegal a motivated communist assassin wouldn’t have been able to procure a firearm?

    The “crazies”, especially in mass shootings, are the extreme minority of homicides and gun deaths. Regulation, like sound background checks, knowing who DOES qualify for having weapons or “concealed carry” because they ARE sane, and non-criminal, is used in NewZealand and other places, and isn’t a bad idea. It does NOT equal seizing all firearms.

    With the number of firearms in the system, it IS difficult to put the cat back into the bag, but continuing to just release more unrestrained cats onto the streets, is NOT the answer.

    Oswald found it easy to buy a junk, cheap weapon, and it really isn’t much harder today, to lay hands on a much deadlier weapon, if you just have the money.

    Oswald used an obsolesent 6.5mm Mannlecher Carcano carbine, a WW 2 Italian weapon with a 5 (five) round magazine and bolt action. Even in California and Massachuttes such a rifle is legal.

    Thinking that banning guns will stop crazy people is insane.

    Sometimes I do have to wonder at the absolutely ridiculous notions some people imagine to be “sound arguments”. But then again, one does come to the cartoon website for belly-laughs. And it is interesting how many belly-laughs come from the absurd parroting of political garbage, as if it were meaningful, compared to the cartoons themselves.
    ^
    I do wish somone – say, maybe, the poster, “ansonia” – would explain just what is so UN-reasonable about a “universal background check”. IF that is, said poster even knows what “universal” might mean, or just what bill in which State is at issue there.
    ^
    The fatuous and assinine riduculosity of “punishing law-abiding citizens”, by requiring background checks for the prchase of firearms, is one of the best belly-laugh producers of all. IF one actually BE/IS a “law-abiding citizen”, that is. I really would like to have some DOCUMENTED PROOF of a “law-abiding citizen” being “punished” by having to wait on a background check, before he/she can walk out of a store carrying a firearm.
    ^
    But then again, to provide an intelligent and sensible, rational and reasonable argument, instead of the mere sqawking of parrots, might require learning how to use a dictionary, and actually trying to find the MEANING of words. Which, for some posters migh REALLYt BE “punishment” after all.
    ^
    Might even depend on how many times one flunked Grade School English.
