And it will happen again…and again…and AGAIN until there is some sort of reform in mental health laws, allowing more and easier availability to treatment.

What has happened in the past are lessons.
My sincere question, as a gun owner/hunter and American citizen is this -
What, if anything, should be done starting today? I’d love to see ideas without the idea or the provider of that idea being attacked.
    Respectfully,
    C.

    @Omnius

I think we would be interested in reading just what your values are Omnius rather than what you believe are other people’s values.

    Please never stop trying, MsKemple.
The nice thing about being attacked in print is that it rarely leaves marks, though sometimes, feelings get bruised – I know.
It is the mark of your character the degree to which you are able to set aside that discomfort, especially if your goal is understanding and dialectic exchanges of ideas.
There are too many who feel that if they can make you “break character” then whatever you said means nothing because you have now become a hypocrite. They would rather trip a person carrying water to the fire than to help put out the fire beside you.
It does not matter whether you and I agree on everything, as long as we can agree to disagree where we must, and move on to find points on which agreement, or at least compromise, might be found.
Each day, I pray to the Creator for wisdom and presence of mind.
Thank you for your kind replies over the last days.
    Sincerely,
    C.

Gabby and husband Mark Kelly fully understand the situation. The ARE for defending the Second, and the “right” to keep and bear arms, but also see, and campaign for, the REGULATION of firearms to meet the needs of the modern, real world, not the mythology of the NRA.

in my younger days I was an avid hunter…lived on about
23000 acres (three family ranches) in TX.
I did 3 tours in ‘Nam, and haven’t owned a gun since, and by the way, haven’t felt the need to own one for defense. Most people who feel they need a gun for that purpose are more dangerous to themselves and their family than they are to anybody who would do them harm, simply because they have no idea what it takes to intentionally use deadly force on another human being and they would hesitate that crucial second while the interloper was pulling the trigger.

Sort of like saying milk is a gateway substance to alcoholism, every alcoholic had milk as a baby and while growing up. Therefore, that has to be the cause.

Gabby Giffords was shot by a Democrat, Jared Lougher who was hearing voices. His college was kicking him out for it. They knew he was mentally ill. They did NOTHING about it.

The Navy knew Alexis was mentally ill. They did NOTHING about it. The VA knew he was mentally ill. THey did NOTHING about it.

Left fringer MORONS blame guns and the NRA.

Furniturmaker; Welcome home. I share much of your experience, and while I do own firearms, and hunt still, I also share your “evaluation” of those who feel they’ve a need for, or own, a gun for “self defense”. The actual crime statistics, not the BS from NRA, prove that out.

From a lot of previous posts, I’d bet that if push came to shove, “Tigger” would be the one on the floor, for that very reason. (or maybe a family member)

30,000,000 mentally ill citizens. How many do not commit murder?
Exactly the same as the milk analogy, no causation whatsoever no matter how it is spun.

In the long range view of things, i.e. looking at gun issues as only fighting off alligators, the way to drain the swamp (or as least start) is to take the ability to define voting districts away from the party legislatures.
    -
The creation of ‘safe seats’ for both parties, besides being undemocratic, causes legislators to be more rigid ideologues, rather than having an interest to working with others to find solutions/compromises.
    -
Also, we need to at least eliminate the secrecy of bribes/campaign contributions.
    -
This principle applies to almost any issue.
