For centuries, people used lead for cups and plates. Lead crystal is blamed for death and brain damage of people of a certain era. Lead pipes even carried water for a while. Asbestos was a wonder product that would save millions from death by fire. More recently, DDT was a wonder chemical that helped increase crop yields immensely. Cigarettes were defended in courts, street corners and bars by professionals and users who SWORE they were safe to use. Medicines enter the market with FDA approval only to later be proven to have unmentioned or foreseen side effects. In EACH and EVERY case, those profiting from the manufacture and trade in these items promised we were receiving items as safe as they were ‘useful’. Some of those trading in such items were victims of the side effects themselves.I hope those who seem so nonchalant about the changes in climate are right. Whatever the cause of these changes, it seems we should do those things we can to try to improve or slow any worsening of the situationWe have been able to survive past misconceptions and even prevent people from being further harmed by companies putting profit over. There are too many low lying areas already seeing a loss of shoreline. It will be harder for those with whom we share our world to survive the kind of changes that many of our scientists, farmers, and researchers believe are threatening us.My question to those who consider me a fool for believing the people I believe is this…What would it take for you to consider climate change a threat to national security and be willing to demand your politicians take action?Curiously,& Respectfully,C.
