   Fear is a mistake, if it is your sole reaction. There is enormous potential here. Attempts to stifle it would be a mistake and, in the long run, unsuccessful.

   Because of the religious right stifling scientific knowlege and research in this country, the rest of the world has passed us by and is benefitting from their knowlege and discoveries while we become a 3rd world nation of burger flippers.

   Clark, The rest of the world has not passed us by. It could, if we don’t do something about the state of education. Our higher education is consistently rated the best in the world but it is becomming prohibitively expensive. Another of our past advantages was being a draw for intelligent motivated immigrants. We need to make it easier to immigrate legally and work on college affordability. However, saying that the world has passed us by is not helpful and is untrue.

   BTW: While I am in favor of more affordable college education I am not in full agreement with the NY Times Op-Ed piece that came out on it the other day.
