Indeed, indeed. And SUCH offense was taken.

Right wing wackos “returning Iraqi veterans” was the tag in the DHS report. I don’t count a 88 year WWII veteran as a “returning Iraqi veteran.”
And, just where does the Muslim wacko who killed the unarmed Army recruiter fit in with the DHS warning? Nowhere?
Yes, as my son is a four tour “returning Iraqi veteran” Marine Corps Captain, I do take offense.

This is verbatim from the report. However, there was of course more than this – having nothing to do with returning vets.
“DHS/I&A assesses that rightwing extremists will attempt to recruit and radicalize returning veterans in order to exploit their skills and knowledge derived from military training and combat. These skills and knowledge have the potential to boost the capabilities of extremists—including lone wolves or small terrorist cells—to carry out violence. The willingness of a small percentage of military personnel to join extremist groups during the 1990s because they were disgruntled, disillusioned, or suffering from the psychological effects of war is being replicated today.”
“The FBI noted in a 2008 report on the white supremacist movement that some returning military veterans from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have joined extremist groups.

I knew guys who joined the Klan, and the northern Idaho groups after ‘Nam. WE have sent folks home from Guantanamo ripe for recruitment to Al Qaeda. Yes, I’ve seen “conservative” communities, and troops coming back from service in Iraq and Afghanistan who will seek support they may get from, “radical groups”. Just think Tim McVeigh.

seems to me recent events are proving the DHS report to be quite accurate.
as far as vets, I understand the report to say that rightwing hate groups would attempt to exploit them, not that returning vets are inherently racist or ready to murder. The report was about the growing numbers of rightwing fanatics and their willing to act on that hate, not about vets per se.

Lord, the GOP is a vet’s worse pal!

Sure glad the left is such a “loving” group–they never show “hate” through actions or speech.

Howgozit, any person ( left or right ) can show “hate” though actions or speech!
Catch on?
HOWGOZIT said, 5 months ago
Yes Dale, but you don’t get that reading many of the posts on UCLICK

Howgozit, could you give an example from these comments above that you would categorize as hate speech or actions?
HOWGOZIT said, 5 months ago

Howie, no one is perfect, not me, not you. You need to get the chip off your shoulder so we can talk reasonably, because I think at base you are a reasonable person. I disagree with your conclusions often, but so what? You want hate from the so-called left? Look at some of the comments Rall gets. You know better than to tar a complete community with one brush stroke. You want hate from the right, look at some of the comments from McCoy. Extremists elicit hate. OK? Where do we have agreement tho? That actually is the basis for democracy in the system as analyzed by John Rawls. Read him, you may be surprised.

I attended a dinner given for vets last night at a “main stream” fraternal organization. I appreciated the event, initially. The speeches and “ceremonies” began to disturb me, masked in the praise of our country was thinly veiled “white supremacist” speech implying that only white Europeans every had a right to be here, or accomplished anything. What happened to my native ancestors was just “manifest destiny”- yes, they used the term repeatedly. Japan, Viet Nam, and others were still just “our defeated enemies”- well they sort’a overlooked the end result of MY war. But it was definitely there, “our way or the highway”, just under the surface of patriotism, which is “nationalism”, which IS the foundation of totalitarianism. It was kind of scary.

I have hard right wing neighbors who spend every week-end at some kind of vet. function all over the country. Here in So. Cal. Latinos out number the whites, which makes them crazy, (they came from Mich. 10 years ago) especially when me, being white, play that Mexican music.
They have so many bumper stickers on their car’s, it’s hard to tell what color their car’s are.
They use to put their Flag out all the time, sense Obamas become president, they dont any more, But now I do.

Salon just published an article about our armed forces lowering the barriers to neo-Nazis, because they’re so desperate for troops. This kind of extremist was banned from the military by Caspar Weinberger, Ronald Reagan’s Defense Secretary, but now anyone can get in. And they quote people like a former KKK leader who say quite explicitly that they are counting on the military expertise for the future.
