What happened to the 4th man raising the flag?
I guess he left to watch “American Idol”.

I don’t think I really get this one. Could someone explain?

Not staged. I’ve seen photos that precede it.

cdward: The comic is suggesting that the attempt to ban gay people in the military is harming the military by having less people in it.

Who was it that said, “I don’t care if you are straight, just as long as you can shoot straight.”?

The only REAL personnel loss you are going to to have in the military (Army, specifically) by banning homosexuals, is lesbian. They run rampant in the Army.

Well, and the entire Navy. I mean, anyone willing to put on those bell bottoms and cute little necktie …

A little inter-service humor here, kids, lightnen up …

It wasn’t the photo that was staged, it was the newsreel footage, as i understand.

Now, if you want a fairly famous photo from WW2 that was staged: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Leyte

Let’s just say that Douglas MacArthur was a glory hound, and even less beloved of the men than Patton.

I don’t know whether Dugout Doug or Bill Mauldin was the more fortunate that Mauldin was in the ETO rather than the PTO. I shudder to think what Mauldin could have done with MacArthur’s order freezing promotions.

    daniel - great quote.
Simon & saltipera – the photo was staged, but it was a re-enactment of what actually happened.

Daniel, also like the quote. We had “gays” in the military 40+ years ago when I was in. They didn’t bother straights, and by and large weren’t harassed themselves, as long as they didn’t. When under fire, all you care about is if the next person is there, and can shoot straight, which is preferable to having them desert the National Guard, or get five deferments to avoid being there to back you up. It is the hypocrisy of the war starters, not just their personal cowardice that inflames me.

motive is correct, I believe. The photo was staged, but it was a re-enactment of what happened with no one recording it on camera at the time. The problem was that the re-enactment didn’t include the actual guys that did it in the first place.

This was the subject of a good film by Clint Eastwood rather recently. don’t remember the name though

“Flags of Our Fathers,” of course! Highly rated on www.metacritic.com, for those who like the statistic view.

I think this is more a statement about how many heroes we would lose, as well as the loss of military numbers overall.

    Just a thought.

“We have to do EVERYTHING to defend this countries and our freedoms against terrorists. […] You are gay? Forget what I said.”
