Che Guevara, a socialist rebel….now turned icon. Parts of Socialism arent bad, however, when there is complete socialism, that is bad. I wonder, how many of us reading this strip have heard that the U.N. has voted against the U.S. sanctions against Cuba. The collapse of the United Soviet Socialist Republic (USSR), was due to a bad economy, yes, however, that does not mean that all of socialism is bad. Healthcare should be for everyone, regardless of employment.

    Isnt Cuba communist?

Yeah, Che is just an icon now. Though the third panel is bit… wrong. Che never thought of socialism as bad joke. So Moore’s just as guilty of ignoring the real man as the idiotic college freshman who put his poster up on dorm room walls.

I think the real question is:
What the heck is Moore doing in that shirt!
Did some google and wiki, scratched my brain cels and have to conclude that at least Che kept to his principles, even after he was betrayed by his former friends.
What I found on Moore is less friendly, sometimes it looks like he is the traitor.

Che in the end was a joke. The only thing he ever did right was his firing squads. He even had large bay windows installed into his office so he could watch.

Some of his failures as a communist was getting kicked out of Med school destroying cuban industries as a minister and the stuff in Bolivia.

Last, late, reply for yesterday (Monday):

Mrob., I am hardly an expert on anything about Roman Polanski (though THE PIANIST is a lovely movie), but I do not think that he was convicted of anything prior to his plea of guilty in the case involving him & Samantha Gailey.

I miswrote in my last remark and have changed it: Laura Bush did not run someone over. She ran a stop sign, ran into a car driven by her friend, and killed him. To have done all that, she was probably driving pretty fast. She was never charged with any crime. Source: http://www.usatoday.com/news/opinion/e1698.htm. (Polanski could return to America wearing a t-shirt that says, “Unlike Laura Bush & Ten Kennedy, I never killed anyone.”)

As to guns, I do not want to outlaw guns. I respect the Second Amendment in its exact wording. Guns’ lawfulness relates to having a well-regulated militia. Thus, all gun owners must pass rigorous tests. All guns should be licensed. In addition, all gun licenses along with the information about the guns must be public information. Gun owners should not see themselves as simply protecting themselves but protecting all of us. If you own a gun, then you take a greater responsibility in the neighborhood to keep everyone safe, which means, firstly, keeping your gun under lock & key, not carrying it around with you. You are not part of a well-regulated militia when you walk around, individually, with a concealed weapon.

Yes, if someone attempts to enter your home unlawfully, then you may grab your gun, although your ‘phone may do you more immediate good—or simply having an alarm on your house. I have lived fifty years on this planet & have yet to have need of a gun. My parents are almost eighty. They, too, have never needed a gun. Living a peaceful, non-violent life is a worthy goal and not difficult to achieve. Too many gun owners are not responsible and live in too much fear & paranoia.

I don’t think that I wrote that firearms hinder law enforcement. I wrote that the police would often—if not usually—prefer that citizens not have so many weapons & not take them out too readily. In times of crisis, emergency, or misunderstanding, people with guns can make a situation worse & more dangerous, not better & safer. Indeed, one reason that police enter so often with guns drawn or in great wariness is that Americans own way too many guns, and the police expect that one might be turned on them. Countries with stricter gun laws frequently have some police without guns, too. Any newspaper will report, every week, of cases when people, arguing about this or that, take out guns & someone winds up injured or dead. It is definitely true that the surest way to have someone you in your house hurt by a gun is to have one in your house.

To return to today’s strip: At least Carl Moore has left chatting inaccurately about Roman Polanski. His blurring the distinction between socialism & communism, however, is not any better. In addition, Cuba has definitely been better under Fidel & Raul Castro & communism than it was under Batista & unregulated capitalism. Moreover, if the U.S. had helped Fidel Castro fifty years ago, when he was overthrowing Batista, then Castro would not have joined the Soviet Union. He was not a dyed-in-the-wool communist. He wanted a better life for the ninety percent of Cubans living in terrible poverty. The U.S. has too often sided with the dictator against the popular uprising, and Cuba is an example.

Mrob., you are correct in your assessment of socialism & of the need for universal health-care. Thanks. Toaster, you, too, make a good point. Thanks. I agree with you, too, JDG. If the U.S. would begin trade with Cuba, we could quickly turn Cuba into a capitalist-socialist state with free elections, much like the U.S. No one wants unregulated capitalism. We have had it. It does not work. The ideal economy mixes socialism & capitalism in a model seen in Europe & somewhat in the U.S. None of could survive without social services & social protections that capitalism abhors. We need to move to a society in which technology provides more of the labor, in which we work fewer hours and practice less greed, in which we have more free time in our short lives to study & to do good, and in which we ensure that everyone on the planet has the basic necessities, the basic utilities: clean air, decent food & drink, sufficient housing, regular & urgent health-care, heat, electricity, & communication.

Okay, I am off to pack, maybe do laundry, buy tickets, work, check on my bank account, deposit checks, & prepare for a teaching weekend. Gotta make some coffee & eat breakfast, too. Good day, all.

Socialism in theory (on paper) is wonderful; everyone is equal and happy.

Socialism in reality (as actually governed) is a disaster. In the name of making everything and everyone equal; governments had to supress dissent and eliminate individual rights.

Socialism can never work in its purest form because human beings are NOT selfless. At least capitalism takes this into account.

Reading your post about a “well regulated militia” so you do not think a militia protects all the time? Even walking alone? You have a sick twist on the 2nd amendment. It is nice how you liberals love so much to call the constitution a “living document”, but refuse to use that logic on the 2nd amendment and give it little respect.
Hey, about that, did our founding fathers (you recall these are the ones that wrote this amendment) go through rigorous training and register their guns making it public knowledge? Nope they did not. I will also say, how does a law biding citizen pose a threat to you walking around with a concealed weapon? You know the “bad guys” do care and how do you protect against this?
BTW all my guns are under lock and key, even the loaded one. I lock my house all the time. So no one can get in and steal them.

Oh, and I have to get the trash out today. It’s trash pickup day. That bleeep socialism at work again, making the city better!

TinyT., you make no argument against my reading of the Second Amendment. You simply call me names. Amongst the writers of the Second Amendment, some had guns & some did not; some had slaves & some did not; some lived in cities & some on plantations. Their world is much too different from ours to be of much use.

When a man enters a school carrying a concealed handgun, all our children’s lives & all our public servants lives are at greater risk. I’m surprised that you can’t see that. I am glad that “all [your] guns” (how frightened are you?) are under lock & key. Make sure that your sons don’t find the key. I’d hate for your family to be another of those sad items that regularly make the newspapers. My best to your wife & to little Gracie. When does the older boy start school?

(One last note: Mrob. & TinyT, the Columbine killers agreed with your attitudes about guns.)

That’s so nice you atheist moron. The problem with atheism is that there is no higher truth. Whatever humans have done evil in the name of God is no different than a Jody Foster fan doing evil.

This country was founded with the intent it would not be run under any religious organization. Smart move, truly. More so, it gives everyone their individual right to trust in their deity or their God. The separation of church and state is just that.

The fact is, this is a democracy. You have the right to move to another county if you think socialism is such a great ideology…Believe me, no one is going to stop you! As a matter of fact, I’ll be on the dock, border, or airstrip waving “bye bye” to you!

America didn’t become the greatest nation in the world from being socialist. Socialism would be the absolute downfall for America.

David, at some point you will have to realize, I’m against psychos having guns. The columbine shooters had stockpiled weapons in their rooms, and made blogs detailing how to make explosives. Someone, like the parents, should have noticed, “oh, hey, little johnny is in his room, and bringing home new weapons.” I’m not saying take away the kids freedom, if he wants to stay in his room, let him, but the warning signs were their, and should have been seen.

Now, I’m surprised you didnt bring up VaTech, seeing as how it is more current. I am all for students with concealed carry on college campuses. That is, if they are of the legal age, 21, and have the licensing for it.

If their are guns in the house, the kids should be taught to be careful with them.

background checks are a good way of preventing that, david.

The shooting of two men as they were going to an early morning service is terrible. However, if one of them had a gun, both wouldnt have been shot in the legs. That is the reality of gun control, the law abiding have nothing to protect themselves when seconds count, and law enforcement is minutes away.

  34. mytinytown

    mytinytown said, 22 days ago

Nice, you basically said the Constitution does not matter, our country is too different now. If a LAW BIDING citizen steps in school with a gun (first he would be breaking zoning laws) nothing bad would happen. If a person gets a concealed weapons permit they are not planning on going in a school and causing a fuss. That person would grab a gun and go with out the permit. I have no sons FYI.
How frightened am I? Because I have guns?
Well for the record I have a 9mm semi-auto pistol with 4 16 round clips (loaded). 1939 German Mauser (hanging on my wall), Tactical .308 with scope, std. .308, 3 .22 (2 scoped rifles and 1 Luger pistol, 16 g pump and a 12 g auto. Most from my dad.
You asked mroberts88 “how do you propose preventing “the psychos” from getting guns?”
Arm yourself and let the psychos know they are not the only ones with guns. That is a big blow to their ego.

    mroberts88
You got that right about columbine, or most killers for that matter. As well, yes kids need to know about guns and what they can do. Everyone knows ignorance is the start of most issues. My oldest is 3. I feel with her intellect I’ll probably let her shoot a .22 at 5.

    GJ_Jehosaphat
Your biblical “socialism” sounds more like love to me. That is someone giving up their personal possessions with free will, not Government force. But thank you for trying.

  35. mroberts88

    mroberts88 said, 22 days ago

Tinytown, that is a good step, arming yourself.

You seem to like the german WW2 era weapons. Shooting a .22 at 5, if she knows safety, is good.

One question, you said earlier, that you lock your doors and guns are in a safe. You just said, that your mauser is hanging on the wall. Now, I dont know where your ammo is. If it isnt locked up, a criminal could break a window, and come in, steal your mauser, and ammo, take you, and anyone else out that enters the house, steal the other weapons, and pawn them. If the ammo is locked up, good. Doors only keep out the law abiding. You should invest in a home security system, like Brinks, or a dog.

Darwin is a THEORY which in most ways is a belief. In fact it is a theory that can not be proved, wonder why? I also understand it takes alot of faith to believe in evolution.
    Religion vs socialism:
Religion is not socialism because it is your choice, not forced on to you by the government. With religion you have free will. With government socialism you do not. I do not give to someone because I am told I must. I give because I want to and I can choose who i give what to. Not the government. A bit of a difference if you ask me. But bible haters won’t see it that way so save your fingers.

    garfieldfan2222 said, 22 days ago

    Someone different,

First off, I want to thank you for your honesty in saying that evolution cannot answer where life came from. There are some evolutionists who will not admit to this. I have met them. Now, don’t get me wrong, I know there are some very brilliant people who believe in evolution. But it’s not as widely accepted as most people think. I saw a poll that showed that about 50% of Americans believe that God used evolution to create the world. 38% believe in the Biblical 6 day creation. 10% believe in evolution, and 2% didn’t know what they believed. The answer to where life came from is a crucial issue because it deals with the starting point of everything in the world today! Evolution has no answer. Creation does. Evolution has no written account to document the beginning of the world (it is based on assumptions and unproven hypotheses). Creation is supported by God’s written account. Now, you can choose to disbelieve the Bible if you want. But to write something off as mythical or magical when you yourself have no answer is foolish!

That said, on to the issue of the church. You obviously do not understand that there are many, many, many denominations (types of churches). You have Reformed Baptist, Southern Baptist, Reformed Presbyterian, Orthodox Presbyterian, Lutheran, Episcopalian, Methodists, Eastern Orthodox, & Roman Catholics just to name a few!! I will grant you that there are certain denominations whose history is dark. The most obvious one is the Roman Catholics and the dark ages. It all happened because the church was given state power as well: power to deny people the ability to read, power to condemn, power to put people to death, etc. The Roman Catholic Church’s history drips with the blood of thousands of people who were put to death or persecuted for being of different faiths or beliefs. The Presbyterian church, too, has been guilty of this in history, though to a lesser degree. BUT…you cannot take the examples of evil in the church and generalize Christianity with it (and I don’t consider the Roman Catholic Church a Christian denomination - too much of what they believe is directly contrary to Scripture).

The truth is that the true church (the church that operates according to Biblical standards) does nothing but help society! Church is not all about fire and destruction. God will punish sin, but He is also a God of love and compassion and mercy.

In regards to the passage from Acts, that was something that that particular church did because it was beneficial and wise in that situation. That is not a universal principle that all churches are held to.

In regards to the passage regarding the rich young ruler, Jesus was dealing with his heart. Jesus knew that he loved his possessions and wealth too much, and He was showing the rich young ruler this by commanding him to sell all. Jesus was not saying that everyone who believe must sell everything they have. Rather, as He said in other passages as well, those who would follow him must forsake all they have (that is, they must not treasure anything above Him. They must use their possessions and money wisely, but no matter how much they have, they must not love their possessions and money).

By the way, just an interesting bit of info. When the Pilgrims first came to Plymouth Rock, they went to the passage in Acts and decided that they would put all their crops together that year and make it a communal supply. Well, that first year, many died from malnourishment because some of those who came (in particular, the ones who came with the Pilgrims with the purpose of seeking riches) did not put in the work to growing their share of crops. Granted, it didn’t help that no one knew much about farming that particular land. Anyways, after that awful first year, the Pilgrims decided to change how things would work. Everyone would grow their own crops. What you grew was what you ate. If you were lazy and didn’t work, you would starve. Obviously, they made provision who worked, but had failing crops or some other misfortune. So, what I’m saying is that communism and socialism don’t work because not everyone is a hard-working “good” individual.
