Wow, Carl Moore is getting lazy. Firstly, we get a week of rerun lame cartoons about the environment. Then, he can’t even bother to spell “Republican” correctly. (I presume that many Republicans can’t either, which is the reason that they invented “G.O.P.” they figured that three letters wasn’t much of a challenge.) Now, he repeats a terrible joke he used recently with Fidel Castro & Sean Penn.
Moore, if you no longer want to write & draw a comic strip, then resign & find another line of work.

Aw, Carl repeating himself is nothing new. Look at all the slight variations of the “Osama calling Obama from the cave” strips we’ve seen lately.

That looks nothing like Chavez. I’m not even sure who that looks like. Perhaps “Vaguely Ethnic Person #227”.

How is it that seemingly intelligent, well-educated people like Oliver Stone end up supporting bubble-headed demagogues like Hugo Chavez, or Castro? It mystifies me.
There is no controversy about Chavez - he’s an out-and-out leftist blowhard who’s slowly turning oil-rich Venezuela into an economic basket case. He is a full-blown anti-Semite, a tyrant, a liar, a murderer, a supporter of terrorists who hates the United States and aligns himself with goons like Ahmadinejad of Iran. Yet here comes good old Harvard-educated Oliver Stone brown-nosing this two bit jerk. Why? He’s not stupid. He has eyes to see with. Why does he do this? Can anybody explain it?
And that does look like Chavez.

Good Call. The problem with Hollywood if you are successful in their little club you get to do what ever you want and attacking conservatives is always hip. Roman Polanski gets to rape a 13 year old girl and “Woppie Goldberg says it wasn’t rape rape”. It is a terrible double standard. Yesterday Cokie Roberts on meet the press said “He raped a 13 year old girl. Take him out and shoot him”. I do believe the relation ship between Hollywood and the news media is beginning freeze.
Michael Jackson dose god knows what with boys and they try to turn him into some sort of hero. Some time ago an Artist called Mappelthorp did some photo’s of naked children, he was charged with endangerment of a Minor and the Artist and Hollywood crowd went nuts. Lets not forget all the trouble with drugs and everything else Hollywood produces.
I know this will not answer your question very well.
David
I read the strip three times the word Republican is not in it. What are you talking about?

sable asked: “How is it that seemingly intelligent people end up supporting bubble-headed demagogues? It mystifies me.
Saul Alinsky answered that in two words: liberal guilt.
DavidDow said, about 1 month ago
Nah, Contrarian. Liberal guilt didn’t support Bush-Dick, and bubble-headed definitely begins describing him.
As for Hugo Chavez, I note that neither Moore nor any of the opiners have said anything of substance against him. Has he made mistakes & does he love power? most definitely. Is Venezuela better off since he became president? most definitely.
jack75287 said, about 1 month ago
Sure David anything you say. Loss of freedom of speech all opposition radio and TV has been shutdown and a shrinking gross domestic product. Yea Venezuela is better off, as for the opiners reread sablebrush5 comment.

Thanks David. Now I understand how so many Americans are willing to put up with the garbage our government does year after year, regardless of who is in office. It’s because we’re apparently too stupid to recognize a totalitarian, despotic, dictatorial regime like Chavez’s when we see one. You actually think that the people of Venezuela have it good under Chavez? And don’t give me that garbage about comparing him to who they used to have. Any government that does the things Chavez’ has done, doesnt deserve to continue.

Venezuela is worse off with Chavez. They have lost alot of rights under him. David, how are they better off under Chavez?

Wow - another genetic crossbreed with a PUPpy today with Oliver Stone (see weekend’s RePUPlican typo). Not being familiar with the Movie & the Controversy - here’s a short vid from the Venice Film Festival:
http://www.guardian.co.uk/film/video/2009/sep/08/hugo-chavez-oliver-stone
Not the movie genre I prefer (SF - Action) so I probably won’t go see it. Wonder how many folks will check it out since Carl’s given it “Free Publicity”?

Harvin said (translated): “Too bad that Chavez is not the president of the United States.”
And Manuel Noriega as his V.P.?

Polanski should be in jail, and Letterman should be fired. Where is the outrage?

Not sure if you agree with me or not. Normally around here when some one quotes me I am told how stupid I am. Your right Polanski should be in jail and Letterman should be fired. This is his second big mess up for Letterman in several months. What was it that he said about Palin’s daughter not to long ago?
As the for the Hugo argument this reminds me of Satipera1-2-3-4-5-6 and 7 when he said how great a single party system was.

Guys I am sorry it was not GDP that was the trouble with Venezuela. It was inflation from all the spending from higher oil prices.
From the CIA fact book on Venezuela.
Venezuela remains highly dependent on oil revenues, which account for roughly 90% of export earnings, about 50% of the federal budget revenues, and around 30% of GDP. A nationwide strike between December 2002 and February 2003 had far-reaching economic consequences - real GDP declined by around 9% in 2002 and 8% in 2003 - but economic output since then has recovered strongly. Fueled by high oil prices, record government spending helped to boost GDP by about 10% in 2006, 8% in 2007, and nearly 5% in 2008. This spending, combined with recent minimum wage hikes and improved access to domestic credit, has created a consumption boom but has come at the cost of higher inflation - roughly 20% in 2007 and more than 30% in 2008. Imports also have jumped significantly. Declining oil prices in the latter part of 2008 are expected to undermine the govenment’s ability to continue the high rate of spending. President Hugo CHAVEZ in 2008 continued efforts to increase the government’s contol of the economy by nationalizing firms in the cement and steel sectors. In 2007, he nationalized firms in the petroleum, communications, and electricity sectors. In July 2008, CHAVEZ implemented by decree a number of laws that further consolidate and centralize authority over the economy through his plan for “21st Century Socialism.”

Slow day for comments - So Why All The Attention to Chavez & Venezuela?
Venezuela is the fifth largest oil exporting country in the world with the largest reserves of heavy crude oil.

Ok I was lazy & did a Wiki
Bush/Cheney must of been drooling thinking about all that oil (and profits). Glad they showed restraint from invading,,,unlike Iraq.
DavidDow said, about 1 month ago
Wow, people here call Hugo Chavez a lot of names. No one can say anything of substance against him.
In 1998, when the people of Venezuela elected Chavez president (something the American people never did for Bush-Dick until his father’s Supreme Court appointed him president), half the nation lived under the poverty line. Now, the percentage is down to 1/4th.
Who was the last U.S. president who cut poverty numbers in half?
