They said the same thing about the Irish, and then about the Italians. Moore is simply relying on 19th and early 20th century racism.
Come to think of it, my dad’s family are Mennonites who have large families. They came over in 1895, and there’s a lot more of them here now. You going to gripe now?
Oh wait- I forgot. They aren’t brown. Silly me.
sablebrush5 said, about 1 month ago
Oh, c’mon, slugqueen, lighten up. Don’t give us that racist crud. To make a comment on the huge influx of Mexican immigrants, both legal and illegal, that is changing dramatically the culture of Southern California, is not racist. Moore is merely making a truthful observation through exaggeration. And it is the truth at the center of the exaggeration that makes it funny.
Vasmosn said, about 1 month ago
Sablebrush, I’m not so sure that it’s not racist and I think that’s the point slugqueen was making. There have been prejudices against all the immigrant groups coming to the US. The main difference is that once the European ones spoke English they could pretty much assimilate and go unnoticed but the “brown” ones can’t. Our country was built on the idea of diversity and free immigration here. Why do we need to change now? We certainly don’t have a population problem yet.

At least the Europeans learned to speak English. The ‘Brown’ ones not only come here illegally, but won’t learn English and want us to change our language.

Diversity is not what made us strong. Assimilation of second generation immigrants into the vast American melting pot made us strong. When each different ethnic group clings to its disparate original culture you have a Balkanization of the citizenry into hyphenated sub-classes which weakens a country.

slug_queen, you’re forgetting one very important tiny itsy bitsy little detail….
The Irish and Italians came here LEGALLY. I don’t mind Mexicans or anyone else coming to this country. But they have to follow the rules. Everyone does. That’s why they’re called “rules.” K?
Have a nice day!!!

People in america, especially those that are more left leaning in their political views, or younger people are much more prone to to call a person, a person’s opinion, or a political commentary racist.
Stating a exaggerated fact does not make a thing racist.
There are a lot of Mexican immigrants, there is no denying that. It is difficult when people who immigrate to our country do little to assimilate into it– except commit crime, and become part of the justice system.
I may not like the flow of illegal immigrants, but hat does not make me racist. I am just as upset about Russian, European, and Asian illegal immigrants, and I don’t care what color they are. Furthermore, if one asked the opinions of the people they are so quick to write off as racist, they might find they have quite a bit in common.

Really tell that to the bankrupt schools that have to educate the illegal, tell that to the swamped emergency rooms. Not to mention the fraud on our systems of good will like welfare. Then there is the slap in the face of all those who work hard and come here legally.
I am repeating myself but . Why doesn’t Mexico place in the Olympics? Because anyone one of them that can run jump or swim are over here. Why is there government so corrupt? Why don’t they make jobs for them selves.
Mexicans have a lot of natural resources. They are good hard working people. But why fix what is broken in your own country when you can just come over here and work.

Sable., to claim that Mexicans are taking over California and that they want non-Mexicans to leave and to use the derogatory term “gringo” are bigoted acts. SlugQ. is correct. Northern European Americans have complained about every ethnic group of immigrants for over a hundred years, which is when the Northern European Americans concocted these bigoted immigration laws about which racists & bigots today rail: “they’re illegals! They’re illegals!” The Northern Europeans and the Spanish weren’t legal, too, but there were no laws about it, so they came in to take what they wanted & settle where they wanted.
Norman, people in America have spoken Spanish longer than they have spoken English. Furthermore, immigrants learn English faster today than they did a century ago.
Britt, shed the melting pot. That is a concoction of Northern European Americans, who don’t want to notice any differences. Differences are not bad.
Harley, after eight years of Bush-Dick, you are not in any position to complain about other countries’ having corrupt governments.

But you do have a point, just look at the poser we have in office now. He is beholden to many many many who put him into office. Just look at this Olympic deal. I wonder who owns those slums he miss managed where they plan on building one of the stadiums.

I fail to see how my being Hispanic somehow threatens your existence as a person of northern European descent. No one is asking you to leave, however, you are clearly asking me to leave. That’s foolish for many reasons, not the least of which is, my ancestors were here long before yours were. Not that that gives me any right to ask you to leave, but it does tend to negate your claim that you have a right to be here while I do not. Sorry, I will continue contributing to society and will continue practicing my culture, and if it offends you, well, I refuse to apologize.
Sincerely,

No David not every ethnic group. The French, the Spanish, the Scottish for the most part were all accepted. Back in colonial times the United States had bigotry just like every place else in the world and just like today there is bigotry.
The problem with bigotry in the United States is that the people who bring it up the most use it for nothing more then politics, it is called racial hoaxes and it is a kind of bigotry in itself. We have had Rev. Wright, Professor Gates and Obama’s own reactions over those two issues and we still elected a black president. So where is the bigotry?
To be honest we are the least bigoted country in the world. Yes and that includes Europe. Name one that is less bigoted then us that has large diverse populations.
Just look at your own language you said Northern European Americans twice. If this is some White Liberal Guilt trip it is very old and no one is listening. It is another form of bigotry, remember a few days ago you made a comment about you hope everyone in Texas is killed and replaced with decent people. Please explain what you meant by that.
Well here is a small list of Northern European Americans:
George Washington
Thomas Jefferson
Ben Franklyn
James Madison
They created a system of protecting your freedom that is the oldest democracy in the world now. To be honest Dave we conservatives are not that bad.
To be honest I do not like today’s strip much my self but that is now reason to act this way.

DavidDow said, about 1 month ago
Mrob., I did not say that people broke the law. You cannot call them legal either, when there is no law. Further, as the European settlers simply came, took what they wanted, killing & enslaving Original Americans in the process, one could argue that they broke moral laws and laws from the countries whence they came.

My brother came up with an idea to help reduce polarization of our society. He suggested instead of “Mexican-American” we say “American-Mexican” (or African or Chinese, etc.) We are all Americans first with our ethnicity secondary.
American-Mexicans have made great contributions to our society. Look at Cesar Chavez. There is no reason at all to denigrate anyone because of their country of origin. That being said, anyone who comes to this country illegally is by definition breaking the law. It doesn’t matter if they are Mexican, Chinese, Russian or German. It’s still illegal and not right. Most people equate illegal immigration with Mexico because that’s where the majority of illegals come from. Not all, but a difinite majority.
Vicente Fox, former president of Mexico, stated publicly in Mexico (and in Spanish, so most of the American media didn’t pick up on it) that the goal of the Mexican government is to reclaim Southern California, Texas, New Mexico and Arizona because they were originally part of Mexico. Part of his STATED method of this reclamation is to send as many people as possible to these parts of the US ILLEGALLY in order to overwhelm the American population in these areas and force them to leave. It seems to be working. (By the way, why should we be forced to give up territory that was conquered in war just like every other territorial acquisition in the history of the world? No one else - except Isreal - has been asked to do this.)
And, finally, when the Irish, the Italians, the Puerto Ricans and most other immigrant groups came to this country, they made an effort to learn our language (English). Mexican immigrants don’t. For the first time in our country’s history, we who were born here are being forced to learn the immigrant’s language. There are areas where I live in Southern California that have NO English signs of any kind. Why are we being asked to assimilate into their society instead of the other way around? (Or leave, since Mr. Fox said that is their goal.)
mroberts88 said, about 1 month ago
David, not saying the people who came from Europe didnt do any wrong.
Jan, that is a good idea, putting the American first. Mexico has tougher immigration laws than the U.S. yet they complain about ours.
Prior to the Mongol invasion of China, hundreds of years ago, they sent in “immigrants”. When enough Mongol fighters infiltrated China, war broke out.

From 1892-1954, 12 million immigrants were legally processed through Ellis Island. NPR says there are 12 million illegal immigrants residing in the United States. At issue is the government’s failure to identify and document everyone who enters the country. The existing law is not being enforced nor respected.

It is good to remind people that Mexicans were here long before the Europeans.
Re: Yesterday’s strip
If someone opposes healthcare reform, it is not fair to label them heartless or without conscience.
I, for one, simply do not trust the federal government. (I learned that from my Siouan great grandmother.)
The Office of Management and Budget analyzed 1000 federal programs. Over half were rated Results Not Demonstrated.
Washington has spent $10 trillion to wipe out poverty in our lifetime.
When President Kennedy took office, there were 39 million Americans living in poverty. Today, there are over 37 million. The percentage has improved, but the nation is still plagued.
Wouldn’t it have been cheaper to just give each of them $1 million?
Then, I am bothered by the Marxist Saul Alinsky’s viewpoint that the poor will always be with us. That it is not about poverty, but power.
No, I do not want people to get sick and die because they lack adequate healthcare. On the contrary, I am not happy with my health coverage.
I simply don’t trust the government to make things better; and there are free market reforms that would significantly improve healthcare in America.

I had nothing to do with it, but you’re lumping me in with them because of my European roots. Hmm… judging me negatively based on my heritage.. sounds pretty d**n racist to me!
You seriously need to hop off of your pompous high horse and take a good long look in the mirror!
We cannot change what happened hundreds of years ago. We cannot also continue to place blame, as those responsible have been dead for quite some time. Doing so is nothing but a waste of effort and resources.
It would be different if those people were alive today. We could punish them and give back to those they stole from. But we can’t now, can we?
Instead of moving forward and doing what is best for this nation as well as the world, you would rather sit back, pretend to be pure of all wrongdoing, and blame everyone else for the problems in the world, except those who are truely at fault.
Oh, and your bi-weekly rantings about the legitimacy of the Bush election victories is getting old. He won. Fair and square. Grow up. It proves you are nothing but a partisan hack.
And again, before you accuse me of being partisan… I never voted for Bush either.

Contrarian - Re: “…there are free market reforms what would significantly improve healthcare in America.”
Next you’ll have US believe there are “Supply & Demand” aspects to the “Price” of Health Care. Therefore - to reduce costs to healthy tax payers, reduce the number of potential patients? Is it this kind of thinking that brought up the concept of Health Care Rationing & those so-called Death Panels (U Betcha - Reduce Costs by Reducing those Demanding Freeloaders)
Technology has made Health Care in America Expensive. CAT’s, MRI’s, Robotic Surgery - sure great medical advances - glad they are there when U need them - but they cost big $$$$ to purchase, install & maintain & repair, train technicians to operate the machines and doctors to interpret the results.
What free market reforms would improve healthcare MORE than the Technology Available Today - mostly to the insured… Seems President Obama wants to use Technology to Save Costs - like computerized medical records - claims & billing & reimbursement via Electronic Filing Systems. Most insurance forms are based on Standardized CMS 1500 Claim Forms as well as Claim Codes (CPT & IDC-9).
Here’s an interesting article about the change from IDC-9 to IDC-10 codes coming in 2013. I was googling to see when the change was happening (heard about it in a class last year).
http://ezinearticles.com/?ICD10-Codes-The-Shocking-Truth&id=2630972
What a knarly can of worms figuring out how to make this work in medical offices, hospitals, insurance companies, etc -
Oh Yeah - the government can Give $$$$$ to the Insurance Companies so they won’t go under trying to keep up with technology (equipment & software).
Or Make Public Option Insurance available NOW - in case the private companies aren’t able to comply with the New Code Changes on their own.
Have U ever had to wait for something like a prescription to be processed when the Computers are Off-Line and U can’t buy them for the cost of a Co-Pay (need access to the insurer’s computers to process the claim instantly).
Just think what will happen to this Convoluted System of Health Care if The System “froze up” and we had to go back to the old paper work - snail mail system of claims and reimbursement while the “Bugs were getting fixed”.
Maybe the One Payer System would be the Better Public Option!

That is my fear based on Washington’s track record.

Give your brother kisses on both cheeks, JanCin. It is an adorable idea. I, however, have always heard the hyphenated words as being akin to names, where the latter part signals the family (i.e., American) to which you belong. In “African-American”, the “African” modifies the “American”, which is the ground, the basis. The same is true for Irish-Americans, Mexican-Americans, Hispanic Americans, Italian-Americans, Chinese-Americans, &c.
As for coming to this country “illegally”, I question the origins of these immigration laws. Northern European Americans devised immigration laws to diminish the flow of immigrants whom the Northern European Americans did not like. Racism & bigotry underlie our immigration laws.
As for learning English, Mexican immigrants learn English as quickly as any other group of immigrants, and today’s immigrants learn English more quickly than did immigrants a century ago.
Thanks for the mention of Vicente Fox’s remarks. Where did you read them?

I’m also sick of “such and such” heritage months… these hyphenations do nothing but divide. We can have diversity and still call ourselves American, without the “blahblahblah-” in front of it. It’s nothing more than a ploy to label and group us by PC libs who want to convince every hyphenated group the non hyphenates hate them.
what about your American Heritage? If folks spent more time studying American history and heritage, we may learn something from the past and move forward, instead of lingering on the past.
Again, David… the claims of racism you post contain racism in themselves. Stop being hypocritical, get off the high horse, and stop and think.

I decided to try a different angle: “vicente fox immigration repatriation” since I remembered that Bush II & Vincente Fox seemed to get along during Press Interviews (Bush liked to speak Spanish in some of his speeches too).
I did find articles about Mexican Nationals Dying while crossing the border. Published June 20, 2001
IMMIGRANT DEATHS AGAIN PUT SPOTLIGHT ON U.S. POLICIES TOWARD UNDOCUMENTED WORKERS.
“Grupo Beta agents will probably be called upon to help the government distribute 200,000 survival kits to Mexicans planning to cross into the US. sablebrush5 said, about 1 month ago
Immigration in the past was characterized by waves of immigrants. That is, after an intial surge of immigration, there would follow an extended period of little or no immigration of that group (think Irish, Germans, Scandinavians, Italians etc.). This forced them to assimilate more quickly because their past ways were not reinforced by more immigrants continuing to follow them into the country.
Think about it. If you immigrate to a foreign country and find your fellow immigrants small in number and you can’t see a huge stream of your ex-countrymen following you in, then your mindset is one of, “uh, oh, I’d better get with this new culture and find a way to fit in.”.
Mexican-Americans today do not have that mindset and for good reason - they are fast increasing in numbers and influence and the pressure to assimilate is weak if non-existent.
For this reason, we need to enforce border control, set a reasonably low quota of Spanish-speaking immigrants for an extended period of time and pressure those already here to assimilate… which we are certainly not doing. We’re doing just the opposite - we’re printing ballots in Spanish, accomodating to Spanish-speaking kids in our schools and offering them welfare, free medical care in our emergency rooms, and even offering illegals college scholarships. As a result, they are not assimilating.
This is all very compassionate - and very American I might add - but it is a recipe for producing a bifurcated culture with two groups speaking a different language, living a different cultural lifestyle and eventually thinking differently politically. When the divide becomes wide enough, trouble will certainly follow.
Being a big admirer of the Mexican people, I hope this doesn’t happen. But it’s becoming a very real possibility.

Re: Amnesty for Illegal Immigrants - The Bush Years: Publish Date Nov. 10. 2004
”Bush revives bid to legalize illegal aliens”
“…They range from a proposal to give legal status to fewer than 1 million agricultural workers to a bill that could legalize most of the estimated 10 million illegal immigrants currently living in the United States. But none of the bills has passed even one chamber.
Mr. McCain is sponsoring a bill, along with Reps. Jim Kolbe and Jeff Flake, both Arizona Republicans, that would go further than the president’s principles by explicitly allowing those now here illegally to enter a guest-worker program and eventually apply for permanent residence.
White House press secretary Scott McClellan said the president wants to “provide a more humane treatment” of illegal aliens from Mexico.
“America has always been a welcoming society, and this is a program that will match willing workers with willing employers,” he said. “It will promote compassion for workers who right now have no protection.””
