When my kids were in school, there was a voucher school just down the street. It had constant problems and was closed down their second year, I think it was. It was a quasi-military school, and the problem is, the folks running it apparently know something about boot camp, but nothing about running a school. So much for that.

Slug, So one example proves that private schools are no good? Scholastic achievement in private schools far exceeds that in government schools. You and everyone else know it. The teachers unions don’t want what is best for the kids. They just want to protect their jobs.

Vouchers steal money directly from the mouths of union officials. Why voucher schools may fire incompetent teachers. Competition is un American as it promotes excellence. If our tenured union card caring teachers cannot exist without unfair private successful learning mills how will we continue to promote mediocrity. Vote no to choice!

Since when did Public Schools become known as “government schools”. Aren’t they under control of local governments & school boards who determine their curriculum?
Aren’t Vouchers a form of Government Funding (so parents have “CHOICE” when it comes to public, private &/or religious schools).
When it comes to religious schools - aren’t religious related entities already considered tax exempt (so they get taxpayer funds without having to pay taxes).
Vouchers for private schools are probably a “joke” when figuring out the true cost(s) of going to a private school.
The Last Line regarding ”Satanic government schools” is the reason why Public Schools are kept “Religion Free Zones” - Satan is a concept that most Reason-Able Folks don’t Believe in. (Thank the goddess ;-))

The problem with public schools is they dont have the rich people, so they cant afford to hire better teachers.

I know farleftside is stamping his feet because he wasn’t the first to post his comment about today’s comic. As for education spending, the United States spends more money on education than any other industrialized nation. The problem is that the teachers are unable to teach due to political correctness.
Oh, at least our person in the strip didn’t “pray”.

We in NJ and my school district in particular were named in our famous funding case. We spent too much and the neighboring urban district spent to little. The Supreme Court literally forced a state income tax to be first enacted and millions and millions have been spent on the urban district. They now spend as much as we and more than almost every other state. Exact same failing results. Hundreds of millions wasted.
BTW, do the Obama girls go to a public school? How about Jesse Jackson’s children (when they were younger)

From the Washington Post
Continuing a tradition among Washington’s power elite, Barack Obama and his wife have decided to send their kids to Sidwell Friends School.
At Sidwell, the Obama girls will be following in the footsteps of Chelsea Clinton, who attended and graduated from the Quaker school during the eight years her father, Bill Clinton, was president.
The last presidential child to attend Washington public schools in modern times was Amy Carter.
We’re often told that public schools are underfunded. In the District, the spending figure cited most commonly is $8,322 per child, but total spending is close to $25,000 per child – on par with tuition at Sidwell Friends.
ANEW SURVEY shows that 38 percent of members of Congress have sent their children to private school. About 20 percent themselves attended private school, nearly twice the rate of the general public.
Nothing wrong with those numbers; no one should be faulted for personal decisions made in the best interests of loved ones.
Wouldn’t it be nice, though, if Congress extended similar consideration to low-income D.C. parents desperate to keep their sons and daughters in good schools?

Teachers unions oppose vouchers because they’re afraid of competition. Competition is what the public schools need and what vouchers would provide. Every parent would vote with their voucher on which school they thought was most effective. Schools that do a lousy job would wither and die. Schools that do a good job would thrive. It’s simple. It will work. And teachers unions oppose it.
What else is new? Teachers unions are good for teachers (their work rules make it extremely difficult to fire a teacher) but they are bad for students.

In another thread I was asked why I appeared to be anti-union. This is just another example. When the former head of the teacher’s union was asked why his suggestions didn’t help kids his answer was perfect. When they start paying union dues i will look after them too. (Albert Shanker)

..Hey,I got a great idea..force vouchered schools to take every and all students in their school system’s territory.Constantly complain about what a crappy job they are doing, and then give them the bare bones to do it.Over crowd and have them teach to a unjust and unneeded test, and then take the vouchers away. Then take the money away from the vouchers and give the money to make billion dollar football stadiums and buy outs to big bankers and ‘international’ corps. because they are too big to fail…
..or we could pay our teachers what they are worth-the priceless people that teach our youth-our children-our future-let’s stop union busting them and respect them as those responsible for the future of our country.
anti-tax anti-union are the outmoded tactics of the failed republican party…the party of big business..you know, the ones with trillion dollar tax payer gifts…worried about your taxes?Stop the corperate welfare.Gov’t should be paying for schools..not billion dollar no-bid gifts to do nothing.
Stop gov’t waste..overspend on our youth and underspend lining the pockets of rich old farts…

When you make it hard to fire someone, they will do whatever job they feel like. Make it easy, they’ll do a better job.

Front page story in today’s NYP. Before new contract negotiations even begin Bloomberg is budgeting an 8% increase in teachers salaries. Everyone with a masters (which means almost everyone) and 15 years experience will earn $104,000/year starting next year. That is for a 180 day year.
@3 hour tour with all respect you obviously have no idea of the amounts of money spent on the public school systems in this country.

Forget the Vouchers - Can U imagine all the “Control Issues” having each eligible school age child having to have a Piece of Paper (or Electronic Form) to enroll in school that is Issued by a govt official (properly signed, notariized, etc to make sure fraud & abuse issues don’t make a further mess of things).
Vouchers are so Old Fashion - Especially in the Computer Internet Age - Give A Kid (and Adult) access to the Net. Then Teach them how to DISCERN Facts From Fiction (ie know the source(s)). Then let Them Learn What Interests Them…Arts, Science, Literature, Etc.
Kids must be So Bored Out Of Their Minds having to learn what some PTA Board & Local Govt thinks they should learn. BUT Make Sure They Know How To Do Math & Higher Forms Like Calculus, Physics, Chemistry. Still need to learn HOW THINGS WORK to Create ??? (unknown future technological advances).

Vouchers are a means for private schools to receive public dollars. They will ensure poor public schools, swindle publically funded private schools, & a poor education for millions of American children. Parents are not qualified to evaluate schools or discern a well-run & effective school. Thus will rise hundreds of swamp-water academies, pretending to give parents what they want. The parents won’t know for years what a poor education they procured for their children.
If Americans want their children to get good educations, then they must direct money to shrinking student-teacher ratios, to revamping teacher-training, to rewarding good teachers who stay in disadvantaged areas, to providing more money for schools in disadvantaged areas, to increase the school year to 225 days, and to keep schools open eighteen hours for before-school & after-school programs.

DavidDow said, 3 months ago
I’m afraid that that’s not so, Wachs. Although the teachers’ union has problems, it hardly opposes most of my reforms. The #1 opponent is the public that wants education on the cheap & remains in denial about how public education works.
